 In the chaos and confusion following the defeat of English army at Bannockburn, the northern counties of England came under immediate and grave risk of attack by the victorious Scottish forces under Robert Bruce. With the English now demoralised and in disarray, the defence of the border counties fell to those lords whose lands were at greatest risk. In many cases they paid “tribute” to the Scots for their lands to be protected. But in Carlisle and the two counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, the English fought back. The Constable of Carlisle, a city that had once been a part of Scotland, was a little known Knight named Andrew de Harcla. His leadership and example during these turbulent times earned him the nickname of 'Black Andrew', the one Englishman who could match Robert Bruce’s most fearsome Scottish captain, the Black Douglas. This medieval adventure covers the period of English and Scottish history immediately following the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 through to the siege of Carlisle in 1315 and is aftermath. The later books in the series cover the years from 1316 through to the English victory at the Battle of Crécy in 1346. Whilst the locations and main events covered by this novel are factual and well documented, dialogue, minor actions and some characters have been added to help to dramatise and bring to life this defining period of English and Scottish history. Black Andrew is a story of war, betrayal and love which recounts the years of a perilous period of English medieval history through the leadership and bravery of this little known and largely forgotten Knight, but who was both instrumental and inspirational in defending the English realm in its hour of need.
