Publisher's summary

Vera Bitter is dead, but her secrets have yet to be buried.

After the tragic death of Bridget’s parents, her grandmother took her in. Vera Bitter raised her from behind a closed door—cold and uncaring from the moment she arrived at Bitter House. After Bridget’s high school graduation, Vera kicked her out without so much as a goodbye, and Bridget never heard from her again. Which is why, when she receives word of Vera’s passing and discovers she’s inherited the family manor, she’s immediately filled with dread.

Those worries are amplified when she arrives at Bitter House after years away to find an enigmatic piece of her past waiting for her. Growing up, there was only one person Bridget distrusted more than her grandmother, and that was Cole Warner—the son of Vera’s house manager and the bane of her childhood existence. Now, he’s her new housemate.

Owning the house she was once forced to leave with a man she’s always despised forces Bridget to confront feelings and questions she’s been running from since the day she was driven away from Bitter House.

Then the first letter arrives.

And with it, a world of secrets, darkness, and deception is unlocked. Years ago, Bridget tried and failed to find sanctuary inside the shadowy halls of Bitter House, and as she struggles to imagine a future there now, she discovers a terrifying truth: behind the iron gate and stone walls of the old estate, nothing is quite what it seems. Bitter House has secrets and, if she can’t decide whom to trust, danger lies in wait.

From million-copy bestselling author Kiersten Modglin comes a bone-chilling, thoroughly enjoyable, and achingly addictive thriller set within the walls of a mysterious old manor with a sinister secret.

Good Interesting Quick Listen

What I love about KM is that her books/audios may be shorter but for me it means there is no unnecessary filler or repetition. It’s just her telling her story. This one is a little different. Not so intense but still interesting in that there are literal clues left for us all to eagerly traipse after. Interesting characters and then ultimately to the conclusion and truths. It’s a quick, enjoyable listen with a little bit of mystery, healing and redemption, and some nice romance!!

Both narrators were excellent in portraying Bridget and Vera as well as secondary characters. Very genuine to who these women are/were and the emotional ranges expressed as the book unveiled the truth!!

A spectacular story

Everything was perfect. The character interaction, the manor, the mystery, the love and best of all the "ten years later chapter" No spoilers here, just enjoy the ride.

My least favorite of all her audiobooks

For some reason, this was so hard to listen to. It was really stretched out, the voices were monotone and I never really engaged to a point that I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Nothing really happened.

Decent but predictable

The story was okay but totally predictable. Still, not a terrible listen. The main character was so wishy washy she was annoying, but nothing compared to the whimpers, whiny, perpetually pathetic sounding voice of the narrator. The sequel chemistry/ love scenes were super cringe worthy.

Worst narrator ever

I just wish I could return this book, but Audible’s crappy limited return policy restricts me from doing so. This book is unlistenable.

just ugh

I rarely don't finish a book even if I'm not totally into it. But this book was so immature, So cringe-worthy. The reader was so over exaggerated... But so is the book. It's like a 12-year-old writing her fantasy about a grown up romance... there's actually a plot line that I was mildly interested in seeing unfold. But I just couldn't get past how awful listening to the main character and her enemy-turned-Paramore because who she thought was her biggest bully turned out privately to be hero... never mind that the main character fluctuates between having the temperament of a spoiled brat 5-year-old to the wisest old woman in the room back and forth... I just can't. Just CRINGE.
