About this listen

Marcus never wanted to spend his life stuck in a hospital bed, but when that life ended, he found himself with an offer he couldn't refuse. A god from a different world wanted to whisk him away and give him the freedom to live a new life. With nothing to lose, Marcus takes the deal and ends up in Wentaria.

Gifted with magic, broken stats, and a curse that makes his life difficult, he has a lot to learn. He'll need companions to guide him, and it doesn't matter if they hate him. All that matters is whether or not he can put his special gift to use and heal those he starts to care for. With the knowledge that the gods are real, and they haven't talked in centuries, how will Marcus learn why he was brought to this world. Follow Marcus on his journey through monsters and dungeons all while avoiding his curse and navigating pending friendships. After all he was told he could be anything, so why not be an adventurer.

He has three questions:

Why was he brought here?

What is a battle medic?

Why is he so broken?

I wanted to love this audiobook

The narrator killed any possibility of enjoying this audiobook.

I had to stop listening 2 hours into it, unfortunately.

I will pick it up on Kindle if it's there.

Alright

Definitely a story if your into gaming. The story is pretty neat kinda like the never ending story— modern twist. Sad how the boys story starts with sad tragedy but is given a second chance in life to be a hero. The performance kept me very engaged from the different characters. Made the story come alive and interested. Otherwise I’m not sure how I could have finished the book. Audio performance was phenomenal.

Pretty generic and by-the-books

From being overpowered, to a clueless idiot. It hits most of the story beats an Isekai usually do. It read like any of a 100 bland Isekai manga's that go for a season before being dropped.

Guy just goes along with everything practically without any questions at all. Gets it's a relationship in like a week with someone that won't even tell him a basic fact about her species' biology and it feels like she wouldn't like him as much if he weren't OP.

she practically rips his clothes off after a god comes down to ask for a solid.

The OP status is uninspired. Felt like the author just wanted the character to be able to do anything, and didn't feel like keeping track of stats and relative power levels.

All and all? Just go read a manga. At least most of them have a little charm occasionally.

Good story

Story was fun and had a good plot. Can’t wait for the next book to see where this is going.

Absolute Torture

I've never heard an audiobook that was this awful.

The narrator has zero range so you can't tell which character is being narrated at any given moment. Every character sounds ridiculous.

As for the story, it sounds like it was written by an angsty 11-year-old.

In short, I will never listen to anything by this author or narrator again.

UPDATE:
Well, I forced myself to finish the book, since I paid for it. Let me just say, my initial estimate of it being absolute torture was 100% accurate.

The writing and narration never got better, they only got worse. I can't wrap my head around how clumsy the writing is. Without giving away a spoiler, I'll say this: in one scene, after some very emotionally linked characters die, the main characters are standing at the murder scene and having an impromptu memorial service over the bodies. It literally goes from that to one of the main characters giving a "Knowing smile" to to the characters that have a love interest and walking away to give them some privacy. The two characters with a love interest start bantering. AT THE MURDER SCENE!

Again, this is just a small sample of how awful the writing is.

The narration is equally cringe. I've read in other reviews that people say the narrator is reading the dialogue and not acting it. This is pretty accurate.

My last straw that pushes this book from horrifically annoying to outright disgusting is the sexual dialogue. It appears this book is written for very young readers, but the sexual log is lewd and clumsy. Again, it sounds like a preteen boy wrote it.

in summation, my previous statement that I will never Again read anything written or narrated by McKetrick, stands.
