Publisher's summary

A Victorian bluestocking with a passion for lost causes attracts the unwilling attention of a frost-hearted viscount during her tumultuous debut season in Bath in USA Today best-selling author Mimi Matthews’ fifth book in her acclaimed Somerset Stories series.

West Country beauty Hannah Heywood may be quiet with fashionable strangers, but when it comes to animals in need, she has no trouble finding her voice. Newly arrived in Bath for her very first season, all she desires is to find one like-minded gentleman. A man of warmth and compassion, as sensitive to animals as he is to people. But if such a man exists, he dare not approach her. Not with the tall, blond, and menacing Viscount St. Clare standing in the way.

James Beresford, Viscount St. Clare, has often been described as a sentient block of ice. A man so cold and dispassionate, he would never suit a young lady of Hannah’s disposition. And she would certainly never suit him. Focused on repairing his family’s infamous reputation, James requires a diamond of the first water. The daughter of a duke or a marquess, at least, not a simple country girl with a passion for four-legged creatures.

And yet, there’s something about conscience-driven young Hannah that draws James, first to Bath, and then into one increasingly hare-brained scheme after another. She confounds him at every turn, subverting his expectations and threatening to do what no lady has succeeded in doing before—thawing his ice-cold heart.

Oh I loved it! 😁

I just love Mimi Matthew’s books- such a gifted writer!! Her characters are so lifelike and real. I love the interplay between James and his brothers. Also, in each book, seeing the main characters perspectives of the different brothers was fascinating to me. In book 4, James seems almost heartless, but in this one, his character is fully fleshed out and you understand why he acts a certain way. Beautifully done! And of course, Alex Wyndham’s narrating…..awww, it’s perfection! The combo of a Mimi Matthew’s book with Alex W narrating…what more could you ask for ??☺️. Thank you!

Heart warming!

Very sweet and romantic story. Got to love a woman who loves her animals and the man who supports that love.

I just love to ongoing family saga with beloved characters, as well as the Pride and Prejudice vibes. Reading A Lady of Conscience was like getting a warm hug. 💕

Love or Duty...Black or White...The Age Old "Coming Of Age" story and learning just what REALLY MATTERS.

I have been wait to hear more about James from my first introduction to him in Gentleman Jim. Beautiful Story...only one regret, I wish it hadn't been quite so short.
As always, Matthews and Wyndham make the perfect pair to bring a story to life!

Love Mimi and Alex!

My only negative is that it is way too short. Mimi thank you! But please more stories from this family, and please make them longer!
I did love the historical references. It really made it rich.

Pretty sequel

The story was a simple one and
the characters did not have a lot of depth. On the other hand it was nice to see how the original characters from books With more substance and complexity had developed (“The Work of Art “and “Gentleman Jim”). All in all a pleasant and relatively quick read.

Loved Every Minute

Goodness ♥️ I have loved all of her stories but truthfully this one is was almost (ALMOST) as good as Gentleman Jim! The only thing I’m upset about is how long it will be before Jacks story comes out! Love all these siblings 😍 and each one of Mimi’s characters! Of course Alex as the best voice in the world (big dreamy sigh) I could listen to his voice forever!

Utterly delightful!

How I have loved this series and have long been waiting for the story of James and Hanna!! …two characters who appear to be at opposite ends of the spectrum emotionally but who obviously end up being the balance and the making of one another.

I truly hope we will soon be able to read the next story in the Somerset series and that it will be about the rascal Jack!

As to the Audible version, the combination of the writing of Mimi Matthews and the incomparable narration of Alex Wyndham knocked this one out of the park!
