Publisher's summary

From National Book Award finalist Randy Ribay comes a gripping new chapter—starring Avatar Roku—in the New York Times bestselling Chronicles of the Avatar series, set in the world of Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

A young Avatar Roku has only just commenced his training at the Southern Air Temple when his erstwhile friend, Prince Sozin, requests his aid in preventing the Earth Kingdom from claiming a remote Fire Nation island. Despite his inexperience, Avatar Roku slips away with the help of an irritating young Airbender named Gyatso. As the reluctant companions delve deeper into their wayward mission, they begin to realize that even greater threats lie ahead. Plagued by self-doubt but eager to prove himself, Roku fights for his life and the lives of others while ensuring that the hidden secret of the island doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

This searing fifth installment in the Chronicles of the Avatar series explores the beginning of Roku’s journey from privileged Fire Nation noble to the powerful but indecisive Avatar whose hesitancy may ultimately pave the way for the Hundred Year War.

Appreciated depth to beloved characters

I do wish it was longer, or had more meat. Though it felt like a complete story with fantastic character and plot development that leave you wanting more.

not as good as the Kioshi ones imo

this one wasn't as good as the Kioshi or maybe even the Yangchen books, imo. it's still worth a read if you like the series though, and I'll probably still pick up any subsequent books that continue Roku's story, once they're available.

Great addition to the Series

I was a big fan of the Kyoshi and Yangchen novels. This book takes the energy previously built and adds to the world of Avatar in the author's own style. An excellent performance and very enjoyable narrative I look forward to seeing what this author decides to do in the future with Avatar Roku as he grows in power and experience.

More Roku please!

Enjoyed this new addition to the ATLA verse. Don’t get me wrong I can nitpick at some mentions to lore not discovered until Avatar Korra but that’s no reason to not enjoy this story.

Fire!!

This book, hoping it’s the first of many of Roku or at least one of two, was absolute fire. Loved every part of it. I yearn for more in this universe. Thank you!

Audiobook narrator Queen

This book wasn't as well written as the other books but Nancy Wu is an amazing narrator!!

Meh

It’s certainly not Kyoshi, but thank god it’s not Yangchen. Like whatever magic was captured with Kyoshi, just hasn’t been replicated. However, narrator did a FANTASTIC job

A little slow paced but good

The narrative arc was a bit slim and doesn’t encompass as much of a journey in character development compared to other stories in this series but overall I enjoyed it.

Nancy Wu can do no wrong… but

Nancy wu is an absolute unit when it comes to performance. I do wish that F.C Yee had written this book, too. The story felt a bit too… one note? The island was essentially the only setting. It felt like the whole thing was a single chapter whereas we get so many more adventures from a single book by F.C. Yee. I didn’t feel so enveloped in the ATLA universe. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not bad. But it lacked explanation around several main aspects of the story, and it lacked that sense of wonder that ATLA is all about.
