Story
In Beat the Devil, addict, alcoholic and best-selling Kindle Singles author Mishka Shubaly returns to battle his ultimate demon: his obsession with rock 'n' roll. Over three decades, his affliction has spawned immeasurable chaos and destruction (and, yes, maybe some debauched good times). While his rivals have graced the covers of Spin and Rolling Stone, Shubaly's projects have always flamed out in the 11th hour. At 36, sober and stable, Shubaly is poised to finally achieve the rock 'n' roll glory he has lusted after for years... or walk away from his lifelong dream forever.

Story
It’s been a rough time for Mishka Shubaly and the women in his family. In a failed quest for something stable, they’ve all arrived at a crossroads. Divorce, unemployment, eviction, addiction, sobriety, an abusive marriage, grief, homelessness, breakups, and abandonment. Can Mishka, still single, self-doubting, and on the lost side of forty, help? Maybe. He’s got the idiotic idea of a pilgrimage from Southern California to northern Saskatchewan for a family reunion. Eight troupers in all.

Story
Unjustly imprisoned for 18 years in the Bastille, Dr. Alexandre Manette is reunited with his daughter, Lucie, and safely transported from France to England. It would seem that they could take up the threads of their lives in peace. As fate would have it though, the pair are summoned to the Old Bailey to testify against a young Frenchman - Charles Darnay - falsely accused of treason. Strangely enough, Darnay bears an uncanny resemblance to another man in the courtroom, the dissolute lawyer's clerk Sydney Carton. It is a coincidence that saves Darnay from certain doom more than once.

Story
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Story
A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, Blackout is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure - the sober life she never wanted. For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure". She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. But there was a price. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth.

Misanthrope. Iconoclast. Apostate. Drunk. Many words have been used to describe Doug Stanhope, but rarely has “hopeful” been one of them. However, heading into 2016, Stanhope peered through the apocalyptic fog and saw a forecast that was more rainbows than acid rain: His first book was set for release, his new stand-up special was in the can, and he was about to film a television pilot with his friend and confidant Johnny Depp. The only thing that could stop Doug was himself, and that’s exactly what he did.

Editorial reviews
Mishka Shubaly might have found musical expression with his band Freskills, but he found his literary voice with his best-selling, autobiographical Kindle Singles. These mesmerizing episodes chronicle Shubaly's many years of recklessness and substance abuse that preceded his sobriety. Because Shubaly performs his stories himself in his worldly, weather-worn voice, the listener feels an added intimacy with the writer, who wears his heart on one sleeve and humor and humility on the other. Are You Lonesome Tonight? examines the fine line between addiction and love. This true story of infatuation gone bonkers belongs in the annals of audio's most gripping modern romances.

Story
Zoe Nolan disappeared from Manchester University in 2011. Her story was sad, certainly, but hardly sensational, Joseph Knox thought. As a crime writer, he felt that dead girls were everywhere, and the missing ones just didn't cut it. He wouldn't have given her any more thought were it not for Evelyn Mitchell. Another writer struggling to come up with a new idea, Evelyn attended one of Joseph's publicity events, and she was wondering just what happened to all the girls who go missing.

Story
In "Books and Roses", one special key opens a library, a garden, and clues to at least two lovers' fates. In "Is Your Blood as Red as This?", an unlikely key opens the heart of a student at a puppeteering school. "'Sorry' Doesn't Sweeten Her Tea" involves a "house of locks", where doors can be closed only with a key - with surprising unobservable developments. And in "If a Book Is Locked There's Probably a Good Reason for That Don't You Think", a key keeps a mystical diary locked (for good reason).

Story
In a strange world where Rose McGowan was continually on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure and sexualization. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and identity and marketing them.

A dark little love story
So, I think I would have liked this more if it was a true story and someone was kind of willing to bare their soul with it. As it stands, as a work of fiction, it was interesting in a dark and twisted kind of way. It was a nice diversion as I was doing some light housekeeping.

A well done short story
What made the experience of listening to Are You Lonesome Tonight? the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed Shubaly's metaphors -- they were overblown at times, but nonetheless both fresh and descriptive.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There is no one to like in this story!
Which character – as performed by Mishka Shubaly – was your favorite?
The narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's a creepy story. It definitely gave me some goose bumps.
Any additional comments?
This is a fast "listen" and worth the time. There is nothing likable about any of these untruthful, shallow, and self-absorbed characters, but nonetheless the writing and the story stay with me. I enjoyed Shubaly's narration, too. My favorite passage was toward the end, when he described videos of cuckoo behavior.

WOW! No Way!
What a crazy story? Wow! I didn't see the ending coming at all. I thought the writing was good and the story was interesting. The narrator did a good job but I have to say there was something missing for me. The story was just a shocker and there was a bit of substance missing. But a good story.

Free, short and different...but not really good
STORY (personal memoir) - This is the story of a lonesome male songwriter who admits he has a miserable existence, highlighted by failed relationships and an addiction to alcohol and drugs. He begins an online relationship with a girl which lasts about a month. They share their deepest secrets and fantasies, and she even sends him nude photographs. They are both "damaged" individuals and seem bonded by their problems. He becomes totally obsessed with her and dreams of a real future together...until he meets her in person. I don't want to reveal too much in case you decide to listen to it, but I will say he is surprised by who she is and feels duped by her deception. Their relationship really goes downhill from that point. The whole story is about screwed-up people in a screwed-up relationship. Like I said, it's different. The ending is okay.
PERFORMANCE - The author reads his own work and does an okay job. He has a very low voice which might be almost sexy if he were reading different material.
OVERALL - It's not bad, but it's not good either. It's an easy listen with lots of sexual language, and it's pretty dark. This is a free download so it's worth the "money," but I don't know if it's worth the time (1:17).

found a new author
Should have written this review when I read the story. It's been so long I can't comment on it specifically, but I do remember quite clearly what I did immediately after reading it. I googled the author and added all his other titles to my wish lists.

It's somewhat entertaining
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It's not very long, so its not like you'll wast days. It's very self indulgent, it starts out sounding smart but towards the end I felt like I'm listening to a chick moan about her crazy X for hours at end. If what this guys wrote is true, it's an amazing story to listen to over drinks; not really good enough to write a book about. But it's a good story; he tells it well and it is short so it's fine.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Wasn't profound, although I think that's what he was going for. It's fine. He went on a bit.
What does Mishka Shubaly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He tells it well, he really gives life to the moments where he talks about loneliness and the angry bits really come alive. Done well.
Was Are You Lonesome Tonight? worth the listening time?
Yes I would say so. It's short so it's not days out of your life, otherwise I would say no.
Any additional comments?
It's not profound, don't be fooled. It's entertaining, the narrator delivers it well, but it's a good bar story.

Hysterical telling of the dangers of social media
The story itself, if true, is very creepy stalker-esque. The author/narrator does an okay job. His voice is monotone, so no intonation during funny or sarcastic moments. He does crack a couple jokes that would be funnier if his voice was more interesting. The story is definitely funnier than probably intended.
