About this listen
An odyssey of family, heartbreak, violence, punk rock, brokenness, broke-ness, sex, love, loss, drinking, drinking, drinking, and an unlikely savior: distance running.
A misfit kid at the best of times, Mishka Shubaly had his world shattered when, in a 24-hour span in 1992, he survived a mass shooting on his school's campus then learned that his parents were getting divorced. His father, a prominent rocket scientist, abandoned the family, and their home was lost to foreclosure. Shubaly swore to avenge the wrongs against his mother but instead plunged into a magnificently toxic love affair with alcohol.
Almost two decades later, Shubaly's life changed again when a fateful five-mile run after a bar fight inspired him to clean up his life. And when he finally reconnected with his estranged father, he discovered the story of his childhood was radically different from what he thought he knew.
In this fiercely honest, emotional, and self-laceratingly witty book, Shubaly relives his mistakes, misfortunes, and infrequent good decisions: the disastrous events that fractured his life; his incendiary romances; his hot-and-cold career as a rock musician; meeting his newborn nephew while out of his gourd on cough syrup. I Swear I'll Make It Up to You is an apology for choices Shubaly never thought he'd live long enough to regret, a journey so far down the low road that it took him years of running to claw his way back.

For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure". She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. But there was a price. From the creator of the blog Renegade Mothering, Janelle Hanchett's forthright, darkly funny, and ultimately empowering memoir chronicling her tumultuous journey from young motherhood to abysmal addiction and a recovery she never imagined possible. Pregnant at 21 by a man she'd known three months, Janelle Hanchett embraced motherhood with the determined optimism of the recklessly self-confident. After giving birth, she found herself bored, directionless, and seeking relief in wine, which she justified as sophisticated and going well with chicken.

When Rebecca Weller’s pounding, dehydrated head woke her at 3:00 am, yet again, she stared at the ceiling, wondering why the hell she kept doing this to herself. At 39 years of age - and a health coach, no less - she knew better than to down several bottles of wine per week. Her increasingly dysfunctional relationship with alcohol had to stop, but after decades of social drinking, she was terrified of what that might mean. How could she live a joyful existence, without alcohol? How would she relax, socialize, or celebrate - without wine?

A hard road
It was a very hard life that was so negative but came out on the other side. Listening to the author was sometimes hard. He had thought he was worse than he actually was and how much he disliked himself amazing turn around. I was glad it happened for him. I could relate, I was married to person that drank a lot but he would become nasty when he drank anything harder than beer. I became a runner for my own sanity at 38 it was hard but the furthest I ever went was a marathon. I ran into my 60s but now I only do a little on treadmill. I did like this story a lot and could really relate.

Amazing, heartfelt, & completely relatable
Mishka’s book is amazing! I listened to Cold Turkey awhile back, but this one knocks it out of the water!!! His writing is amazing and his deep voice is sexy! His story is a great one, as an addict myself, and one who is a member of a 12-step program, I truly appreciate hearing other ways someone got clean and/or sober. He’s right about how AA and NA want everyone to believe they have the monopolized answer, and although it has been the answer for me, I have always known it’s not for everyone. Thanks for sharing your story with Mishka and I can’t help but want to go for a run after listening!!!

Astonishing told, a heartwarming story
I had read Mishka Shubaly’s Amazon Single ‘The Long Run,’ and I wanted to hear a longer narrative of the events from there and also what happened after ‘The Long Run’ ended.
The audiobook was perfect for me, especially as the first half of the book is pretty bleak, as most addiction memoirs often are. So to listen to it while walking, in my case around green spaces near where I live, made it somewhat easier. And the last four or five chapters are as uplifting as the beginning of the book can take you to a bleaker place.

Brutally Beautiful
This is such an excellent listen!! I came across Mishka several years ago on a Rich Roll episode, and he was one of those guests that really got through to me. I was a year or so into sobriety, being saved by cycling and running, and enthralled by those having similar stories that they were able to put into words. I hadn't paid much attention since, except reading a couple of posts and catching a couple episodes of his podcast, although always touched by them. I love to read and really enjoy memoirs and finally started using audible so I could more often. I'm so glad I finally got to this one. Such an incredibly painful and yet inspiring story for me. And best to have heard in his own voice. This has left so many feelings and thoughts stirred up in me, the heaviest one being the much needed reminder that the years at war with myself made me powerful beyond measure and capable of any challenge I fully throw myself into. Major gratitude to Mishka and everyone else actively apologizing to themselves and encouraging others.

Got lucky on this one.....
Had no expectation when choosing this. I always find it hard to start a new book after finishing one. Especially one that was particularly captivating. I’ve started to not read any info about a book before choosing and it really paid off with this one. I was taken in right away and could not wait to continue in the journey with Mishka. The story was so honest and real and yes “inspirational” (sorry, wasn’t looking for that but, alas it motivated me..... might even take a super long walk tomorrow!). Hope you also find this book and enjoy it as much as I did!
