Publisher's summary

From Annapolis to the classroom, discover key lessons on effective teacher leadership through the experiences of one courageous teacher.

Have you ever wondered what sets successful teachers apart, and how they positively impact the education system as a whole? Are you interested in discovering the strategies and skills that teacher leaders use to inspire and motivate others, both in and outside of the classroom? Would you like to draw from the experiences of a teacher leader who not only successfully navigated the challenges of racism, but also of the education system?

Dr. Jordan B Smith, Jr isn’t like every other teacher you see walking the halls of schools–there are a number of things that set him apart from his colleagues:

  • His career in the military before entering the teaching profession.
  • The unspoken rite of passage he went through in order to find success.
  • His drive, determination, and passion to be the best educator possible.

Through these differences, Dr. Smith was able to forge a successful career as a teacher leader for the last 15 years of his 19 year teaching career. The best part? He is sharing all of the wisdom he gained over these years in this book so that you can apply what he has discovered to your career.

Inside, you will discover:

  • The journey to becoming a teacher leader–including Dr. Smith’s personal advice to help you along the way.
  • A collection of practical attributes to be a more effective teacher leader–with clear instructions on how to implement these in your own practice.
  • The 12 rules to becoming an effective teacher leader–and tips on how to implement each right away.
  • The role of teacher leaders in curriculum development–including a framework for effective collaborative curriculum development among teachers.
  • How to build a strong school community (and how to get the entire school involved in the process).
  • How to lead meetings that don’t leave other teachers resenting you.

An illuminating outlook

I have never really connected teachers with leadership, and this was an oversight I wasn't even aware of until I started listening to this book. I really loved the aspect about respect, which many educators seem to demand without really giving a reason why they deserve it. This book is a wonderful resource for educators, and I found it really illuminating on some aspects of leadership.

I am not yet an educator, but I hope I'll be a worthy one when I get there.

A great vision on teaching

I absolutely loved this audiobook, we often forget how impactful teachers are on their students. My dad is an English teacher, and he is passionate about his job, but it's not easy every day. He always told me that teachers needed to also be parental figures to some students, friends when needed, but also always have an eye out. This audiobook gives fantastic advice that new teachers need to hear! I loved how motivational and inspirational the author was, and i liked his "12 rules to becoming an effective teacher leader" because being a teacher ask a lot of skills, especially leadership!

I learnt a lot!

This book isn't just for teachers. It will help anyone trying to build a community, where that's physical or online, especially for the latter, as people sometimes forget that all communities are built on trust, even if you've never met the person. Some great tips on empathy, courage and relationships. Thoroughly recommend.

Smith gives us the keys to unlock the cabinet of his seemingly never-ending reservoir of education-spreading knowledge.

Wether one may want to enhance communication with peers or deliver difficult information to students, this audiobook will give you hands-on, real experiential based advice from someone who’s been there, worn the t-shirt, and gone back to teach a masterclass.

A rule-based framework is presented for the listener to become engrossed, step-by-step.

There are strategies for cultivating a healthy environment around peers, rallying positive educational communities, and harnessing the qualities of a teacher that will no doubt be followed and respected by peers and students alike, and so much more.

Not all teachers are built the same; be one of the outliers. This excellent title will show you how.
