About this listen

#1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author returns with the fifth installment in the bestselling Gunnie Rose series as sisters Lizbeth Rose and Felicia, as well as brother Eli and Peter, are reunited in Texcoma, only to break apart before the Wizard’s Ball held in San Diego, which will determine all their fates.

Following the murderous events of the “gripping…thrill-ride” (Karin Slaughter) Serpent of Heaven, Lizbeth Rose is awaiting the arrival of her sister Felicia and her husband’s younger brother Eli in Texcoma. Both needed to leave the seat of the Holy Russian Empire in San Diego after Felicia’s burgeoning wizardly power in death magic became the reason for kidnapping and assassination attempts from her mother’s family of high-powered wizards in Mexico.

Yet bad news has traveled ahead of them, as Eli is called back to San Diego, taking Peter along with him, splitting them apart in more ways than one as their enemies’ plans for revenge come to fruition. In this fifth installment in the beloved and bestselling Gunnie Rose series, #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Charlaine Harris has crafted a family drama of murderous and magical thrills.

Normally a big fan, but..

This audiobook fell flat with me. It read a bit like a television episode, where just enough drama happens to justify the story. This seems to be such a trend in science fiction and I hope it doesn’t become the norm for CH.

Story Keeps Growing

This is a good addition to the series that expands Lizbeth and her sister's relationship. The narration was excellent as usual.

Some confusion

lizbeth didn't feel like Lizbeth. 😕 story felt rushed and kinda disjointed. I'll have to see how it continues

Harris Delivers

Harris is the best storyteller. In a series, she weaves a beautiful story and wonderful characters. Narrator is perfect.

Did NOT see that ending coming…

…but it was perfect. The stage is set for another book, of course—which I’m looking forward to. And the narrator is amazing! Listening to this was pure pleasure.

Great story

Love everything by Charlaine Harris. And Eva's narration is perfection. The only complaint (ish) I have is they could be longer.

Not as good as previous books

I've read all of Charlaine Harris's books. This book wasn't as exciting as previous books. It's been awhile since I've read other Gunnie Rose books, but I'm pretty sure the bad communication between Lizbeth & Eli has happened before.

Highly Confused

I have the kindle edition as well as the audible and I’ve noticed some major differences in the two. Chapter 10 when Eli says he’s leaving is completely different in the kindle version. Then later on in the audio version the narrator says Lizbeth and Martin were together, but the kindle version does say Tarken which is correct. So are there 2 different versions of this story? I admit I listened to it all but haven’t finished reading it yet. I only got the kindle version because of the whole Tarken/Martin mix up just to see if that was truly how it was in the book. I enjoyed the story and I can’t wait for the next book. But I truly wonder if the audible performance was rushed, or if the book itself went through some last minute changes after the audio had already been recorded.

split perspective

I’m not a fan of back and forth 1st person perspective. Please just pick one main characters’ voice to write in, whiplash distraction doesn’t add to the content and for me it drastically devalues the experience.

Love

Love this series. I think it’s different than anything. I’ve listened to before and I love this author.
