About this listen

Set in Nazi occupied Europe, All My Love, Detrick follows the lives of two families, one Jewish and one German. They are bound together forever by a forbidden love.

Excerpt: The desolation all around her touched a nerve, and she hurried to turn the corner. A soft voice whispered in her mind, "Hurry, Leah, it's not safe here." Her heart began to race. Sweat formed in her armpits. Now there were no more houses; only open field. Walking faster her heel hit a patch of ice. Stumbling and tripping she fell. Fortunately, she'd fallen to her left landing on a grassy surface. Nausea played havoc with her stomach as it accompanied the thumping of her heart in her eardrums. Something felt wrong.

If you like historical sagas, you'll love All My Love, Detrick.

Worst narrator ever!

The story may have been good, but it was hard to tell. With this narrator, the plot sounded sophomoric and and the conversations fake and stilted. With poor sound management, I could hear cars and other traffic noise in the back ground. I will try another book by this author- hopefully someone has engaged a professional reader for future endeavors.

Where did they find the reader?

It's a pretty good story, historic events well mixed with fiction. But could they not find a reader who is actually literate? I've never heard such fumbling, toneless, unprofessional reading. My advice: Read the book, don't listen to it.

Why this narrator??

Wonderful, if rather short story. I listened to it in 2 days on and off.
But, this narrator... just NO! He reads the book like my little 6 year old granddaughter learning to read her first books!
Please, Audible, give this book a better chance by re-recording it with someone else! I think this audio does a disservice to Ms. Kagan’s book.

Heart-rendingly beautiful & sad

Well written, with engaging characters, this story of war & oppression is both entertaining & thought-provoking, leaving the reader sad, but fulfilled.

Good story

Would you consider the audio edition of All My Love, Detrick to be better than the print version?

No

Who was your favorite character and why?

Detrick

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The recording was poor. It sounded as if it was done in a someone's basement. At one point, you can hear a typing sound in the background, and on more than one occasion, you hear a cat meowing (not part of the story). It was the worst recorded book I have heard to date.In addition, the reader did not do different voices for the various characters and often was devoid of emotion entirely, which gave the reading a very flat quality.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I enjoyed the story considerably though my personal peference would have been for a different ending (don't want to spoil the ending for anyone).

Poor audio quality and narration.

This is a poignant and engaging story about horrible events that took place before and during part of the holocaust but the audio quality sounds like the narrator was recording without a microphone, in a non-soundproof room. I had to turn my headphones up all the way to hear. Plus he narrated with no voice character changes, emotion or much change of cadence...kind of like a first time dad reading to his child hoping that the story would hurry up and be over so that he could get back to his football game. I've already heard the sequel and am grateful for the change in narrators!

Beautiful story

This story will leave you feeling so many emotions, but the most powerful is the feeling of love! Heartache and anger equally thrive through these chapters and a beautiful story of love prevails wishing there was more. Story was well narrated, easy and clear, spoken with emotion.

Audio quality poor

Sounds like it was recorded in someone’s home with a old tape player rolling in the background.

Choppy Narration

Chapters repeated several times throughout the story and the narrator was monotone. The recording was of poor quality and long hesitations between chapters. However, the story line was very well written and focused on life outside of the concentration camps including all the trappings of moral humanity verses immoral inhumanity and everything in between.
