About this listen

A special live performance to satisfy Fiddler on the Roof fans who have long wondered what became of Tevye’s beloved family. Experience an enthralling performance featuring a cast of rising Broadway stars who join actress and author Alexandra Silber in celebrating the Audible release of After Anatevka, the sweeping historical novel she wrote about Tevye’s second-eldest daughter, Hodel. Silber’s fascination with Hodel began when she played her in a production of Fiddler in London’s West End. Actors often write a backstory for the characters they play so they can fully imagine and embody them onstage. But Silber was more interested in Hodel’s fate than her history. “I had never played a character who felt so much like me,” she says. “I felt responsible for what happened to her after she boards the train to Siberia to join her revolutionary fiancé Perchik.”

Originally commissioned by Symphony Space, a form of this concert was produced in March 2017. After Anatevka Live brings to life dramatic excerpts from Silber’s novel with five original songs by contemporary composer and lyricist teams, plus two much-loved songs from Fiddler and one gem that was cut from the final song book. Directed by Carolyn Cantor with musical direction by Ben Moss and an introduction from Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning Fiddler lyricist Sheldon Harnick, this is a charming and magical event for any lover of musical theater.

About the Author and Performer

Grammy-nominated actress and performer, Alexandra Silber most recently played Guinevere in a record-breaking run of Camelot at Shakespeare Theatre of DC. In 2017, she completed a run on Broadway as Tzeitel in the Tony-nominated revival of Fiddler on the Roof, co-starring alongside six-time Tony nominee Danny Burstein as Tevye. Alexandra played Hodel in the Sheffield Crucible’s 2007 production of Fiddler on the Roof, and its subsequent West End transfer. She made her American acting debut playing Julie Jordan in a revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel for Reprise Theatre Company in Los Angeles and garnered an Ovation nomination. Then, she made her New York theater debut portraying the Young Wife in the Transport Group’s revival of Michael John LaChiusa’s Hello Again (Drama League Award), and later that year played opposite Tony Award winner Tyne Daly in Terrence McNally’s Master Class at the Kennedy Center, and made her Broadway debut in the same production. Alexandra was recognized for her portrayal of Maria (opposite Cheyenne Jackson as Tony) with the San Francisco Symphony, in a concert presentation of West Side Story, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, which was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. She also performed on the 57th Grammy Awards broadcast with Cheyenne Jackson.

Great idea, but...

The story is great. The reading is great. The singing is not great. I ended up skipping the songs and it was fine.

Theatre Night at Home

This was a wonderful idea!

Audible and author Alexandra Silber took her book, which is a sequel to Fiddler on the Roof, and combined chapter readings with songs from Fiddler and several brand new songs.

I’d love to see this become a musical and I’d love to hear more mixed media live readings such as this on Audible.

You gotta Love Fiddler on the Roof

This is a great way to add demention to the characters of Fidler on the Roof. The performers take this to a new level. Good to hear the characters fleshed out so well.

Loved it! Fun idea, fun event to listen to!

Al Silber is engaging, intelligent, passionate! I love the idea of filling out the story we love with so much of what we aren't given in Fiddler. The song we're brilliantly woven with the narrative of the book. I want to read the rest of the book now!

I think I would have liked it more live onstage

Her premise is interesting, but I never got engaged or stopped feeling that I would have liked it if I saw it onstage but wasn't thrilled with it in this format.

Lovely

Good story, great traditional musical theatre music. The thing I love most about this production is the insight into the process of acting, of how much work it can take to bring a character to life. Everyone knows Fiddler, it's a much revived classic, having someone who played two of the five daughters continue the story adds extra lunch to the story of what happens next.

Lost my interest by the end

I love Fiddler, but this didn't capture me. I finished it, but I didn't find the songs to be accessable. Perhaps if the entirety of the novel had been read outloud, it would have felt more like a complete and engaging story.
