Starting college is an exciting and daunting prospect - but for students with disabilities, the process of enrolling and participating in classes comes with unique challenges.

Do you find yourself wondering who will advocate for your child?

Are you confused by the accommodations and opportunities available to them?

You're not alone.

Millions of parents each year face the perplexing, sometimes contradictory policies of colleges and universities when it comes to disability accommodations. In fact, of the 69.6 million families in the United States, more than 20 million have at least one family member with a disability.

This means that millions of parents have been in your shoes, trying to do what's best for their child and set them up for success.

Financial aid, residence halls, dealing with professors, and more…it can feel overwhelming at times, and that's where this guide comes in.

Packed with relevant information about university policies, legal rights, and accessibility options, you'll find the answers to your most pressing questions about your child's college experience.

In Access, here is just a fraction of what you will discover:

  • How to access campus resources that will help your child navigate day-to-day requirements and manage exams and projects
  • The most popular accessibility apps that will make it easier than ever for your child to stay on track, take effective notes, and study well
  • What accommodations and rights your child is entitled to as an enrolled student, and how to make the most of them
  • An overview of tuition assistance programs designed to help make college an affordable reality
  • Crucial considerations you should take before enrollment, such as physical accessibility on campus

And much more.

The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that around 11 percent of US undergraduate students have a disability - every one of those students deserves to have a rich and fulfilling college experience.

Enlightening

Rarely do we think of access to education as anything other than physical access to a building and its facilities. The book clearly describes the ways parents of children with disabilities are challenged but also provides a step by step process to overcome the challenges. More importantly, it identifies ways we can advocate in support of reducing if not eliminating the challenges.
