Enjoyable

A great YA mystery! There was some paranormal, romance and some historical fiction mixed in as well!! Ian Gordon did an amazing job with the narration. This book did not disappoint. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Raw and Compelling

Firstly you should know that this book contains domestic violence and child abuse.

Secondly, wow, just wow. There is so much to like about this book, the characters are so well done it feels like they could walk off the page, the emotions the story conveys are strong and raw, I found it impossible not to get drawn in. The book is told from the perspective of an adult telling their child about a pivotal time in their life, I got so swept up that I forgot, I was surprised when I got to the end and it went back to this setting.

I'm impressed by the creativity that went into creating both the main story and all the visions that Alex sees when experiencing psychometry.

The book is well worth listening to and the narration contributes a great delivery that helped convey the strong emotions of the story and excellent character voices.

Paranormal Detective Series

I love paranormal stories and enjoyed the book even though I’m not a teen. It is about Alex an elderly detective telling his story as a 14yrold. It was heart wrenching past for Alex with his stepfather. I loved the fact he could interact with ghosts by touching objects. He has a lot of guilt unable to save Frank and esp. Gloria. Paige is a true friend who believed in his ability. I look forward to Alex’s next adventures as he matures. Recommend to anyone who enjoy paranormal coming of age mystery. Haunted by the past

Story was good, main character touched items and had visions of peoples murders surrounding the object. Which is great, so it progressed normally then took many unexpected, in good ways, twists and turns. The ending was sad but good, a good lead into a second book, though I am curious how they will continue the story... Warning: lots of death and murder, death of a child...

Ghost whisperer???

This is a good book, you’d be ok just reading it as a stand alone title. That being said I am looking forward to the next installment.
The author does a great job intertwining some history with the story.
Narration was great and I would definitely listen to more by this narrator.
If you have a history with an abusive person this story will be hard to take. It is even if you don’t. You want someone to stand up & stop the madness and wonder why they don’t!

Twists your heart

A narrator can make or break an audiobook. Ian Gordon as narrator never disappoints. Alex's story will twist your heart--and be warned: Teenage Alex and his young stepsisters live in a violent, abusive house and the author pulls no punches. Alex navigates horrific beatings from his stepfather, pretends to care about school, and tries to protect his stepsisters. He discovers that if he holds something a dead person once owned, he relives their moment of death.

At this point in a review, I usually make a funny comment, but not for this book. I will say that Alex is a tough kid who survives because he wants justice for the dead, and because of his deep connection to his deceased father.

The book had elements of Lumley's Necroscope series and Harris' Harper Connelly series, both of which I love, and A Life of Death is a worthy entrant into this subgenre.

Without spoilers, I will say that the ending tied the book together in the best possible way.

Recommended.

A Nice Surprise

I had the opportunity to request a copy of this book and now I get to review it.
This book was a pleasant surprise. I have not read any books by Weston Kincade nor have I listened to anything narrated by Ian Gordon. I have to admit that, given that Mr. Gordon has an English accent, I had to keep reminding myself that the setting was in rural America. That being said, Mr. Gordon's narration was easy to listen to. You could tell by the inflections in his voice which character was talking.
The story was well written. It kept me engaged and there was very little rewinding to listen to a passage again. I enjoy books with a bit of supernatural flair in them and you definitely get that. The protagonist, despite his gift, comes across as believabe and you care about him and the challenges he faces.
This will not be the last Kincade book I will read.

Wow! This book was a great combination of genres!

***I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review*** Thank you Mr. Kincade for this opportunity to listen to your work.

This book did a great job of mixing YA with Mystery, Historical Fiction, Paranormal and Romance! By the description I knew I would like this book and sure enough I was quickly sucked into the storyline and felt a good connection with the characters. The description was very clear of what to expect. I really liked the premise of the book, with Alex being able to see the past through the touch of an item connected to the dead person. As a fan of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, this book did not disappoint. Though other than the horror of a drunken step father, this was not necessarily a horror book.

If you are not a YA fan , do not be dismayed from reading this book. It was really well written from a teenage point of view, realistic yet not sappy. No heroine or hero in this book, just a normal kid who finds that he has a tendency to see the past.

As I am not a big fan of history and war books, I did zone out a bit during some of the war scenes when Alex had flashbacks while at a historical museum but it was due to my disinterest, not necessarily the book itself. It was not the majority of the book and I still found it interesting.
For the romance aspect of the story, it was well done... timely and not a "instalove" relationship. There was no sex, which I think many books fall back on to make sales.

The Narration was well done, the narrators voice was clear and pleasant to listen to. I listened at 1.25 to 1.5 speed throughout most of the book, which to me means the narrator did a good job and didn't drag his words out for too long. Some books I can push at 2.5 with the speed seeming almost normal.

I would recommend this book to fans of Mystery and Paranormal genres. It did not disappoint!

CAPTIVATING & CREEPY TALE...

This is awesome! Gripping, masterful tale about a boy who had been abused (it can be a bit disturbing at times, but well worth the listen/read), but he has the ability to "see" into the deaths of people when he touches an item of the murdered person. I was interested from beginning to end; the narration was superb, really gave the story life. I am excited to listen to more in the series, and I would definitely recommend this book, really good stuff :)
