About this listen

A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king—while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son—in the first book of a Norse-inspired fantasy romance series from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.

Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband’s back.

Freya’s dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region’s jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son, Bjorn. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: She possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood, which makes her a shield maiden with magic capable of repelling any attack. It was foretold such a magic would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the one who controls the shield maiden’s fate.

Believing he’s destined to rule Skaland as king, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders Bjorn to protect her from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. The greatest test of all, however, may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.©2024 Danielle L. Disappointed

I was really excited about this book after reading the reviews and just feel let down after finishing. It’s very predictable and the writing isn’t very good, which is strange for the author. The narrator did a great job though.

Loved the main character

4.4 I really enjoyed this book right from the very start. I love Freya as a character. I found her to be very relatable, I loved her boldness, and her sharp tongue. There were more than a few predictable moments then I would have liked, but I enjoyed the banter along the way. Fun slow burn, by the time it gets spicy you’re ready for it. Overall, not an overly spicy book. Bjorn was a fun book boyfriend while it lasted. Definitely looking forward to book 2

So Good!

This is the first book I’ve read by Danielle L. Jensen. I loved it so much. I don’t read a lot of Norse inspired fantasies so I was completely engulfed in this story. That aside it was the characters and pace of story that got me. Some of the spicy scenes did feel like they took over the story sometimes and I felt myself rushing through them to get to the story again. I think I’m just getting tired of overly done spicy scenes in general, so maybe that’s what got me rushing through this books scenes, but this author does them really well at least. It was genuinely a breath of fresh air to see character dynamics that were impactful to the storyline. And the story kept me constantly wondering what was happening, who was allied to whom and so much more. And not seeing the constant romanticism of abuse/neglect that other stories have right now. But the build up of the relationship and the increasing stakes at hand were phenomenal. I can’t wait for the second book. I love Freya!! It can be hard to really love a main character who is different than you, but Freya as a main character has my heart. I couldn’t help but cheer for her, cry for her, and see her truly unravel her own fate.

Good story good narration.

I want to shut up and say the story was very well written in nation was wonderful. I am so over where I want to take the female main character and just shake her because she makes every wrong decision and is annoying. This is one of those books. I have another hour until the bus is over. I’m sure it will end wonderfully but right now I am beyond frustrated. I’ve almost stuck with five different times.

Vikings!

I did enjoy this book, but it seemed like she had way too much inner dialogue and that made her a tad too whiny for my taste. I will read the next one when it releases though. ;)

Plot Twists

I liked this book but I hated how she always acted helpless and never took control of her own fate. She just let things happen to her. She was also extremely clumsy and always falling. The plot twists at the end were surprisingly good. I would continue the series. I really enjoyed the banter between the characters.

Freya is unbearable

Freya is an angry martyr. Perhaps appropriately so but the poor character development in this action packed book makes her and the overall connection between her and bjorn weak. Loved hearing the correct pronunciations of the names. But don’t think the narrator needed to have an accent as well.
