Reunited in their quest to hunt giant elk in the wilds of Arizona, Cody and his oldest friend, Jeremiah "Liver Eatin'" Johnson, embark on a long trek to California. Along with freezing mountain rains and killing desert heat, the two men face down armed bandits attacking a wagon train, hostile Apache warriors, and a pack of hungry wolves intent on making a meal of them and their livestock.As the story develops there are problems with both of their quests. Cody is backed into a corner and may have to leave his beloved Colorado Rockies forever.
