George Orwell
About this listen
1984 is a novel by the British author George Orwell in 1949. Considered a classic of dystopian fiction, the book has contributed many terms to common usage, including Big Brother, doublethink, newspeak, and thoughtcrime, while the adjective Orwellian in the context of government deception, surveillance, and misleading terminology has entered the English language.
The narrative unfolds in an imagined future when most of the world has fallen prey to omnipresent government surveillance, propaganda, and endless war. Great Britain has become a province of the super state Oceania, which is ruled by the Party, whose leader is called Big Brother. The Party employs the Thought Police to persecute individuality and independent thinking. Winston Smith, the protagonist, is an ordinary worker who secretly despises the Party and dreams of rebellion.
Time Magazine included the novel on its 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005, and it is placed at number 13 on the editor’s list and at number six on the reader’s list of Modern Library's 100 Best Novels.

Best narrator
Apart from the story being hideously well written, the narrator's ability to give voices to different characters is amazing!

Story is so real life today in 21st century!
The writing and story are timelessly brilliant. Narrator was okay except for the Dick van Dyck style of English accents, made it painful.

A Real depressing dystopia
Sad to realize that each and every one of us is holding a device that acts very much like a telescreen...

as dreadful and magnificent as one's expects
many are acquainted with plethora of 1984/orwell references; but listening to the book gives those references and many more far deeper and chilling impact when one hears them or use them again. Nicely laid out story and amazing details that brings the characters into -relatable- life..

To the narrator..
The book is obviously an absolute classic. The narration was absolutely perfect and really managed to capture the grim tone of the book, what a great listening experience!

Narration voice is too monotone
I appreciate that the performer tries to use a less emotional voice to help create a sense of the world of the Big Brother... but to have the same monotonous narration for the whole book is a tad too boring.

a classic of classics
I have never r we this before. I was born in 1986 and since I was a child I heard of how good this book was. No review I could have heard or I can write here will make justice to this masterpiece of human intellect.
