Trauma Memory

Trauma is often thought of as severe or extremely harmful experiences, but trauma is actually a reaction to an event, not the event itself. And a seemingly mild or straightforward experience can cause you trauma and affect the rest of your life. Experiences of trauma become the brain’s map for protecting and defending you from future pain, but sometimes you don’t need protecting. Trauma can then poison your mind and reveal itself in both visible and invisible ways.

Contrary to long-held belief, trauma is not only caused by exposure to a single, extreme event. The cumulative effect of common stressors that we encounter in our day-to-day lives can have an equally significant impact on our mental and physical well-being. From difficult childhoods, to bereavements, pregnancy and childbirth, and even stressful jobs, traumas - both large and small - are a part of life we can't control, but we can change the way we respond to them.
