This chilling tale of one man’s descent into madness was published shortly before the author was institutionalized for insanity, and so The Horla has inevitably been seen as informed by Guy de Maupassant’s mental illness. While such speculation is murky, it is clear that de Maupassant—hailed alongside Chekhov as father of the short story—was at the peak of his powers in this innovative precursor of first-person psychological fiction.

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was born on August 28th, 1814, at 45 Lower Dominick Street, Dublin, into a literary family with Huguenot, Irish and English roots. Between 1838 and 1840 Le Fanu had written and published twelve stories which purported to be the literary remains of an 18th-century Catholic priest called Father Purcell. Set mostly in Ireland they include classic stories of gothic horror, with grim, shadowed castles, as well as supernatural visitations from beyond the grave, together with madness and suicide.

First published in the English literary anthology annual The Keepsake in 1833 by Mary Shelly, master of Gothic fiction, The Invisible Girl is a story about the turbulence of secret love. Like much of her work, Shelly blends the dark and the supernatural with elements of romance and intimacy and unravels this story within a story with aplomb, and the setting of rural Wales in the early 19th century lends to the foreboding and bittersweet tone of the tale.

The work is commonly associated with the rare mental condition often called "split personality", referred to in psychiatry as dissociative identity disorder, where within the same body there exists more than one distinct personality. In this case, there are two personalities within Dr. Jekyll, one apparently good and the other evil.

Durante un interrogatorio, proprio sul luogo dove è seppellito il pover'uomo assassinato, il cuore 'rivelatore' sospinge alla follia l'avvocato il quale fuori controllo confessa l'omicidio. Classico racconto del romanzo gotico, "Il cuore rivelatore" è considerato fra le massime espressioni dell'opera di Poe.

Scritto nel 1844 "Una storia delle Ragged Mountains" fa parte di una silloge chiamata "I racconti del terrore". Il protagonista, sotto l'effetto di una droga, sperimenta gli effetti di un viaggio nel tempo, ritrovandosi nel passato e in luoghi diversi, dall'America del 1827 all'India del 1780, dove viene coinvolto nella battaglia tra gli Inglesi e le popolazioni dell’India. La storia narra delle torture subite da un prigioniero dell'Inquisizione spagnola. Il protagonista è ritenuto responsabile di crimini e rinchiuso in una cella completamente al buio. Tentando di stabilire le dimensioni della stanza e a causa della profonda e opprimente oscurità, sviene. Una grande lama a forma di pendolo è sospesa sopra di lui: il suo movimento sempre più rapido e inesorabile è tale da fargli presagire che presto sarà prossima a squarciargli il petto.

Il narratore del racconto è un amico di Legrand e la storia inizia quando, una sera, gli fa visita per osservare un insolito scarabeo d'oro che questi ha trovato. Legrand porta l'attenzione dell'amico-narratore al carapce dello scarabeo, su cui sembrerebbe disegnato un teschio stilizzato.
