Così l'autore mette le mani avanti e si permette di spaziare nelle fantasie suggerite dalle novità dei suoi tempi: il mesmerismo, lo spiritismo, l'idea, insomma che potesse esistere il modo di comunicare con esseri disincarnati e che essi potessero influenzare gli eventi della nostra vita.

"A Country Doctor" is a short story written in 1917 by Franz Kafka. It was first published in the collection of short stories of the same title. In the story, a country doctor makes an emergency visit to a sick patient on a winter night. The doctor faces absurd, surreal predicaments that pull him along and finally doom him. Pubblicato nel 1886, questo famosissimo romanzo di Stevenson è un grande classico della letteratura mistery e della fantascienza. Ciò non toglie che sia anche un grande opera letteraria che approfondisce la psicologia della scissione della personalità e il rapporto del uomo col suo lato ombra. Descrive inoltre mirabilmente lo stato di dipendenza provocato dalle droghe e l’illusione di potersene liberare facilmente si trova tutta nella frase del protagonista: “Posso liberarmi di Mr. Hyde quando voglio”.

Composti in momenti differenti e pubblicati su varie riviste e poi riuniti nel 1872, i singoli racconti, benché diversissime siano le storie ivi riportate, possono essere considerati parti di un'unica narrazione, fatta di oscure risonanze e di sinistri riflessi. Elemento esterno unificante è la figura-cornice del Dottor Hesselius, medico, psicologo, mistico e metafisico tedesco, primo "detective dell'occulto" della letteratura europea.

I tre racconti che compongono "Il diavolo nella bottiglia" appartengono alla serie di racconti polinesiani, scritti quando Stevenson, minato dalla tisi, si era trasferito definitivamente nelle isole Samoa. Affascinato dall'esotismo del paesaggio e dal carattere della popolazione locale, lo scrittore ne riproduce i tratti caratteristici in una narrazione che unisce ai toni della favola la forte connotazione morale che aveva contraddistinto le sue opere precedenti.
