Please like, follow, and subscribe.   BREAK: MORGAN MEDICAL JAN_FINAL STORY 1: Three new principals announced for Newton schools Newton County Schools announced three new principal appointments for the 2025-2026 school year. Dr. Vanshelle Turner will lead Indian Creek Middle School, Michael Chapple will head Alcovy High School, and Keisa Gatewood will take over Cousins Middle School. All three bring extensive experience and a focus on relationship-building and student success. Dr. Turner transitions from South Salem Elementary, Chapple moves from Indian Creek Middle, and Gatewood steps up from her role as assistant principal at Veterans Memorial Middle. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley praised their leadership and commitment to advancing the district's goals. STORY 2: Madison Reschedules Trash Pickup For Memorial Day, May 26 and Tuesday May 27 Madison's Street and Sanitation Department will not collect trash on Memorial Day, May 26, to give employees the day off. Monday's trash and recycling pickups will shift to Tuesday, May 27, and Tuesday's pickups will move to Wednesday, May 28. All other routes remain unchanged. Residents are encouraged to check the city's website or social media for updates. STORY 3: Two Covington teens charged in Monroe murder, shooting Two Covington teens, Laddarreus Tiller, 17, and Jatorian Ellis, 18, have been arrested and charged with murder, armed robbery, and other offenses following a May 6 shooting in Monroe. The incident resulted in the death of 17-year-old Eitenne Boakye and critical injuries to 23-year-old Jazaire Burgess. Tiller was arrested on May 17 by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team. Monroe Police thanked multiple agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, for their collaboration in the arrests. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.      We’ll be right back   Break: COPY CENTRAL STORY 4: Kidnapped Woman Seeks Help At Morgan County Rest Stop A woman at a Morgan County rest stop reported being kidnapped on May 17, prompting a police chase on Interstate 20. Covington Police spotted the suspect's vehicle, but the driver, Charles Davis, fled with the victim inside. The chase ended in Rockdale County after a PIT maneuver, and Davis was tased and arrested after attempting to flee on foot. The victim was unharmed. Investigators revealed the kidnapping began earlier that day in South Carolina, where Davis allegedly forcibly took the victim from her home. He faces multiple charges in Georgia and South Carolina. STORY 5: Jakai Newton's Kicks For A Cause Supports KD Strong Foundation Newton alumnus Jakai Newton hosted the inaugural "Kicks For A Cause" event on May 10 at Denny Dobbs Park to honor his late friend Kendarrius “KD” Spear and support the KD Strong Foundation. Despite rainy weather, the event featured giveaways, raffles, free shoes, and autographed memorabilia donated by NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle. Newton emphasized spreading positivity and giving back to the community, with plans to make the event an annual tradition. Newton, a 6'4" guard, recently committed to Georgia State's basketball program after transferring from Indiana. Please like, follow, and subscribe.   BREAK: MORGAN MEDICAL JAN_FINAL STORY 1: Rebecca Hill promoted to director of Georgia International Horse Park Rebecca Hill has been appointed director of the Georgia International Horse Park (GIHP) in Conyers, following the retirement of former director Jennifer Bexley. Hill, with the city since 2003, previously served as deputy director and brings extensive experience in venue management, business operations, and budget planning. She holds certifications in equine center management and tourism marketing and is a graduate of Leadership Rockdale. City Manager Kameron Kelley praised Hill’s enthusiasm and expertise, confident in her ability to lead the 1,400-acre facility to continued success. STORY 2: Back to Back Drug Arrests in Morgan After months of investigation, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office made two drug-related arrests. Yolanda Yvette Canteen, 46, of Madison, was charged with trafficking crack cocaine after deputies found four ounces of cocaine in her vehicle and additional drugs at her residence. Georgia law mandates a 10-year minimum sentence for such offenses. Separately, Todd Lawrence Pitts, 38, of Bishop, was arrested for fentanyl possession during a probation search. Authorities had been monitoring Pitts, suspecting him of selling fentanyl, a highly potent and dangerous synthetic opioid. Both suspects remain in custody at the Morgan County Jail. STORY 3: Teen wanted in shooting of stepfather; suspect considered armed and dangerous The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is searching for 16-year-old Jayden Daniel, wanted for the fatal shooting of his stepfather, David Gay, 41, at Gay’s home on Avery Drive in Covington. The incident occurred Tuesday evening, and Daniel fled in Gay’s 2016 Cadillac Escalade, later found abandoned at Denny Dobbs Park. Daniel is considered armed and dangerous, and arrest warrants have been issued. Authorities urge anyone with information to call 911 and avoid approaching him. STORY 5: Drivers urged to buckle up during national Click It or Ticket campaign Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown and the NCSO, in partnership with the NHTSA, are launching the national *Click It or Ticket* campaign from May 19 to June 1, coinciding with Memorial Day travel. The campaign emphasizes seat belt use to save lives, with law enforcement taking a zero-tolerance approach to violations, especially at night when seat belt use drops. In 2023, 8.1% of drivers and passengers didn’t buckle up, putting lives at risk. Sheriff Brown urges everyone to prioritize safety, reminding loved ones to wear seat belts every time. Whitley claims the photo was part of a consensual exchange and argues his termination lacked due process. The city counters that Whitley, an at-will employee, violated policies prohibiting sexual activity on duty and was not entitled to due process. Whitley is seeking damages, back pay, and legal fees in his federal lawsuit. STORY 2: Library to hold Yard Sale Join the Community Yard Sale at the Morgan County Library on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Explore a variety of items, including artisan pottery, toys, designer textiles, First Edition books, and housewares. STORY 3: Piedmont Newton earns 'A' safety grade Piedmont Newton Hospital received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, recognizing its commitment to patient safety. The grade reflects over 30 measures of errors, injuries, and infection prevention. CEO Lindsey Petrini credited the hospital’s culture of safety and staff dedication for the achievement. Leah Binder, Leapfrog’s CEO, praised the hospital for prioritizing patient care. The Leapfrog Safety Grade, updated biannually, is the only peer-reviewed program focused solely on preventable medical errors and is free to the public. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.      We’ll be right back   Break: COPY CENTRAL STORY 4: Morgan County 4-H Wins At State Wildlife Judging Contest Morgan County 4-H’s senior team placed third at the Georgia 4-H State Wildlife Judging contest on April 27, with team member Jamie Nelson earning the third-highest individual score. The competition, held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center, challenged 170 participants from 24 counties to evaluate wildlife habitats, identify food sources, and propose management solutions. Morgan County’s team, coached by Tamara Nelson, prepared through hands-on training at UGA. The event, supported by UGA’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, highlights 4-H’s mission to foster environmental stewardship and leadership in youth. Bleckley County 4-H won first place and will compete nationally. STORY 5: Two Rockdale murder convictions upheld by Supreme Court The Georgia Supreme Court upheld two 2023 Rockdale County murder convictions. Ashton Denny Jr. was convicted of malice murder for fatally shooting his half-brother, Kevin Rowe, in May 2020. Denny, sentenced to life without parole, unsuccessfully appealed, claiming ineffective legal representation. In a separate case, Alfred Jermaine Arnold was convicted of murdering his landlord, Loretta Goolsby, in April 2019 after she evicted him. Goolsby suffered 17 lacerations, and her bedroom showed signs of arson. Arnold, also sentenced to life without parole, appealed on grounds of insufficient evidence and ineffective counsel, but the court rejected his claims.
