It’s fine, but for how long it took them to make this, I was hoping for more. It introduces you to a character for one of the great leagues, shows you the relationship the kin have towards each other, and sets up a future plot.

Not once did someone try to sound like the Scottsman from Samuri Jack!!! other than that, wonderful book.

good first dive into the Kin

It just felt like a pretty generic story that gave little story or real world building to the Votann faction. First 3/4 of the book were very slow and the last 1/4 had an alright climax with some corny moments. Any non Imperium factions always get subpar books so they are consistent in that much.

Overall I enjoyed that the book established a lot about Kin society and they think and behave, which is something. the faction was really needing. Unfortunately, outside of that, I found the characters and story very boring and difficult to care about. It spends a lot of time re-establishing itself over and over only for what felt like a very half baked climax.
I would recommend it to anyone who wants a better understanding of Votann and Kin on a lore level, but would not recommend to anyone else really.

For the first book about the Votann I'm a bit disappointed in it. Story didn't really go anywhere and was largely forgettable.

It's Okay

A worthwhile wait for more lore on the Leagues of Votann! This book provides deep insight into the culture of the Leagues, whilst also providing a story that draws on the science-fantasy themes 40k is known for.

The Ancestors Are Watching!

This is a slow burn, but that's perfect for introducing lore for the votann. characters are likable, dark and fun moments to be had. Great book!

great start for the kin

Really really slow start, but just awesome conclusion, I have a faction that I can actually root for now. Did not expect it to be as touching of a story as it turned out to be. Also va did a great job but it looks like this is her first time narrating 40k and it just solidly shows, but again still did great for a first go.

As this is the very first novel to look at the leagues of the votann, it’s to be expected that the plot isn’t overly complex. The book has quite a slow start as others have said but does a good job familiarizing many parts of kin culture and life.

No spoilers but the book definitely errs on the side of lighthearted for the 40k setting, very little of the passive background horror that the setting is known for comes through in this, though after reading through the Ahriman series this was a nice change of pace.

As many have said already, the narrator is not on par with the other black library narrators. Her voice isn’t annoying or grating but she reads with very little inflection. Many scenes where the characters should’ve been much more emotive were read rather flat, though this does work well for some of the more reserved or relaxed characters. Again, coming from the Ahriman books, this is a significant departure and left something to be desired.

Overall, a solid introduction to the leagues. There are certainly many other much better 40k novels but there are also many much worse. If you’re interested in the kin or looking to expand your knowledge of the setting I can surely recommend.
