“A lyrical work of self-discovery that’s shockingly intimate and insistently universal…Not so much briefly gorgeous as permanently stunning.” (Ron Charles, The Washington Post)

Poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late 20s, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born - a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam - and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation.

At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard.

With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Vuong writes about the yearning for connection that afflicts immigrants. But ‘ocean’ also describes the distinctive way Vuong writes: His words are liquid, flowing, rolling, teasing, mighty and overpowering. When Vuong’s mother gave him the oh-so-apt name of Ocean, she inadvertently called into being a writer whose language some of us readers could happily drown in.... Like so many immigrant writers before him, Vuong has taken the English he acquired with difficulty and not only made it his own - he’s made it better.” (Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air)

“In order to survive, Little Dog has to receive and reject another kind of violence, too: he must see his mother through the American eyes that scan her for weakness and incompetence and, at best, disregard her, the way that evil spirits might ignore a child named for a little dog. There is a staggering tenderness in the way that Little Dog holds all of this within himself, absorbing it and refusing to pass it on. Reading On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous can feel like watching an act of endurance art, or a slow, strange piece of magic in which bones become sonatas, to borrow one of Vuong’s metaphors.” (Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker)

“A bruised, breathtaking love letter never meant to be sent. A powerful testimony to magic and loss. A marvel.” (Marlon James, author of Black Leopard, Red Wolf)

“This book - gorgeous is right there in the title - finds incredible, aching beauty in the deep observation of love in many forms. Ocean Vuong's debut novel contains all the power of his poetry, and I finished the book knowing that we are seeing only the very beginning of his truly magnificent talent.” (Emma Straub, author of Modern Lovers and The Vacationers)

Featured Article: On the Other Side of Grief with Ocean Vuong

In his latest poetry collection, Ocean Vuong gives language to the most universally human experience: grief. We understand the feeling, but in order for us to wrap our heads around it, the definition must be somewhat malleable. Grief can be whatever you need it to be. It’s helpful to think of grief as a longing for the moments and experiences that could have been and all the things left unsaid. We’ve all had something to grieve—and ironically enough, the thing that could return the feeling of connection we need is grief itself.

Editor's Pick

The most powerful listen of the year so far
"I don’t even really know where to begin in describing how much I loved this one. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is Ocean Vuong’s debut novel, and to call it anything short of "stunning" would be an understatement. Vuong is a master of language, and it's obvious when listening to this how much thought and care went into crafting every sentence of this story. This novel, written as a letter from a son to his mother, will break your heart, and there’s no way around it. And since the author himself narrates, you get to experience the enthralling atmosphere that is his voice. I feel confident that when we look back on our favorite listens of the year, this will be a top contender."

Thought what's wrong with me that I didn't love this novel and was relieved when it was finished. But after reading the Audible reviews see that I'm not alone. First the narration is so monotone and whispery. Definitely poetic in form and not typical fiction.
Loved a previous reviewers comment that "sometimes a bloody nose is a bloody nose and a glass of milk is just a glass of milk".
Also the novel keeps skipping around in time and I wasn't always quite sure where we were. Obviously this is not a feel good novel but that is not the purpose of all literature. War, prejudice, poverty, drug addiction etc., etc. are real and can and should be artfully portrayed. Real life can be heart breaking. Getting a pedicure or eating veal will never be the same.

Ocean has a staggeringly beautiful way with words. This incredible work is still resonating with me. His lovely, gentle voice was full of emotion that helped elucidate the scenes that he was setting. I highly recommend this listen - it certainly opened my eyes.

Profound

I lost count of how many times my tears rolling down my cheeks reading and listening to Vuong’s story. There are so many raw but real and beautiful moments that hit me hard and I had to stop reading to absorb them. The story brought me back to my childhood memories of the loud music from the funerals at night. Even as a kid I couldn’t find it entertaining because I couldn’t see the reason behind the noisy music and the drag queens performance. I just couldn’t comprehend why they allowed such noisy music and performances while they mourned and cried for the loss of the loved ones. And I now understand why thanks to the book. Thank you very much for sharing this memoir to us!

Sad, painful read and even more painful to listen. But a very beautiful story

My son gifted me this book for Christmas, and I have both read and listened to it. There isn't really enough I could say to do it justice, but Ocean Vuong is known as a poet, and although this is a novel, it's still poetry. Lyrical, raw, honest, painful, and loving...all at once. Mature themes, nothing scandalous, but there is sex, spoken of plainly, and perhaps a CW for substance abuse is in order for those who would be impacted by that subject matter.

Read by the author, heartachingly beautiful

A beautifully written and read memoir, rich with life’s authentic rawness but above all a tale about the power of genuine, even if troubled, love.

Raw and beautiful

One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. I could have remained locked in its meditation for a lifetime, and that would be enough.

This book was well written and evoked Images, thoughts and emotions I’m too unfamiliar with. My empathy is real yet it made me so uncomfortable I was not able to enjoy this.

Poignant

A poignant and beautiful poetic memoir that touched me to my core. Vuong’s lyrical way with words and masterful storytelling will speak to you in so many layers. Truly one of my favorite books of the year for sure.
