Acerca de esta escucha

In this powerful novel from award-winning author Suzanne Chazin, a tense standoff between a Hispanic police officer and an undocumented immigrant leads to the shooting death of one, the shattered life of the other, and the shocking connection between them.

On a clear, moonlit night in December, police detective Jimmy Vega races to the scene of a reported home invasion in an upscale New York community. As Vega arrives, he spots a Hispanic man who fits the description of the armed intruder running from the victim's estate. Vega chases him into the woods. When the suspect refuses to surrender - and reaches into his pocket - Vega has only seconds to make a life-or-death decision.

What begins as a tragic mistake takes an even darker turn when Vega uncovers disturbing links between the dead man and his own mother's brutal, unsolved murder. Vega's need for answers propels him back to his old Bronx neighborhood, where he is viewed as a disgraced cop, not a homegrown hero. It also puts him at odds with his girlfriend, Adele Figueroa, head of a local immigrant center, who must weigh her own doubts about his behavior.

When a shocking piece of evidence surfaces, it becomes clear that someone doesn't want Vega to put all the pieces together - and is willing to do whatever it takes to bury the truth. Only by risking everything will Vega be able to find justice, redemption, and the most elusive goal of all: the ability to forgive himself.

Not as organized as other books by author. I kept having to return to previous chapters thinking I missed something.

a story about people living in fear of police and hope for a new life.

good story about today's struggle with immigration

This story was so far the best of the three I’ve read. Well written, building upon previous stories, structured plot with good twists. I also found the narration to be very good - Thom Rivera’s numerous voices were on point!

Jimmy Vega’s Best book so far

Ok the plot was a bit convoluted, but the depth of probing into ethical conflicts, PTSD, loyalty, character building- the things I enjoy about this series- I found it very emotional and kept me hooked

My favorite

I read the first two books in this series and enjoyed them. They provided a gritty look at illegal immigration, with complicated questions and even more complicated answers.
This third offering by Chazin could have been ripped from the headlines, but instead the main characters (Vega and Adele) spent so much time in emotional navel-gazing and self-pity. We're also forced to rely on coincidences - an immigrant living in the Bronx with no access to a vehicle takes a job in a posh restaurant 50 miles away?
I wanted to like this book more than I did, and I will definitely read the next offer in the series; I am just slogging through this one, though.

Not as strong as earlier Books

Almost didn't make it through. My third read in series and was disappointed in lack of character development. Found the story depressing and disturbing. Too many stupid decisions by characters. Book redeems itself some about 3/4

Disappointment and frustrating read
