Acerca de esta escucha

If twenty-two-year-old Madeline Bennet knows anything for certain, it’s that she’ll get her desired apprenticeship with the Royal Guild.

After all, her family is well-connected, and she’s all but dating the grand duke’s nephew.

But Madeline does not get her apprenticeship. Instead, she finds herself working with a trio of knight marshals, traipsing around the US, arresting all manner of magical miscreants. If tracking trolls, running from murderous pixies, and stumbling into a dangerous web of criminal activity isn’t enough to keep her occupied, there’s also Gray, Jonathan, and Eric—the knights themselves.

They’re strong. They’re skilled. They’re ridiculously handsome. And they don’t want her on their team.

The four must play nice for six months, but can they even manage a week? What will happen if the knights realize the royal advisor’s daughter isn’t just a prissy girl in heels? She’s harboring a dark secret—one that could prove to be more dangerous than even Madeline imagined.

Guild of Secrets is book one in Obsidian Queen, a spicy-sweet series intended for adult audiences. This contemporary fantasy is full of magic and humor, perfect for listeners who enjoy swoony romance and sparking chemistry. While the books have multiple potential love interests, at the end of the series, Madeline will end up with one man only.

I enjoyed this book a lot!! The characters are all soo interesting and are introduced in a way where I truly don't know who is interested in who!! The FMC is admittedly a little dumb and annoying, she gives you nieve YA vibes for sure! Overall im excited to keep guessing and continue with book 2!

Pretty Good!

I have so many books to read, but I went to my wish list to find something and this first book was on there and looked interesting. I got through it so quickly I’m already on book 3 as I’m posting this. The narrator feels perfect.

Stumbled and fell in love with this series

I didn't expect this book to be as good as it was
bI don't like books with more than one possibility for love interest but I enjoyed this book so much and I'm glad I don't have to wait for the next book.

Unexpectedly good

I picked this up because several other urban fantasy books I enjoyed all pointed to this as "also boughts," but I wish I hadn't also bought it.

The characters are mostly shallow and 1-dimensional. The FMC can be summarized as a spoiled princess that lusts after anything male that moves. Seriously, for a "clean" romance, a significant percent of the time she is undressing the male characters in her mind and thinking of all sorts of naughty things to do with them. It reads like a spicy romance because of all the fixation on the lust with absolutely no basis for any kind of real romantic connection....other than hotness, of course. But things never go farther than kisses. So, it's uncomfortable for those who like clean and boring for those who want spice. I seriously don't get it.

The worldbuilding is meh. It's basically trying to play on the idea of shifters but without actual shifters. Each magic group has magic that they associate with an animal...but kind of not because it's also about what the animal represents...but not really. And it also impacts their personalities for some strange reason as well? For example, the guy who the author is trying to line up as her romantic lead (in this book, at least, because the FMC goes through guys like Kleenex), possesses "wolf" magic. Apparently, it means that not only does he have magic that allows him to persuade people (what that has to do with wolves, I don't know), but it also makes him a good leader (never mind that most wolves are followers, not alphas), makes him super loyal (cliche), and he also has really good hearing??? It's like the author wanted to write a werewolf but wanted to be unique.

I can deal with an annoying main character if they have a decent character arc, but it appears that she won't be changing anytime soon. I can deal with flimsy worldbuilding if the story is interesting, but this is mostly about characters lusting after one another (seriously, the book could be a third of the length if we deleted all the repeating thoughts about how hot the various male characters are). There just isn't anything to save this book.

If you like trite immature romantic plot lines and whiny shallow female protagonist this book is a winner.
