A piercing, unforgettable love story set in Greenwood, Oklahoma, also known as the "Black Wall Street", and against the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921.

Isaiah Wilson is, on the surface, a town troublemaker, but is hiding that he is an avid reader and secret poet, never leaving home without his journal. Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family's financial situation is in turmoil.

Though they've attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible-toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can't turn down the money, and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon.

But life changes on May 31, 1921, when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

TBH, I wasn't in search of a YA novel to listen to, but I follow this author on TikTok and came over at her suggestion because I wanted to support the treehouse project. What a surprise this was! I found a skillfully woven and deeply personal story about a time and place in our history that I should have been taught when I was a YA. I fell in love with Greenwood and her people, and found the telling of this tragedy accessible, and something I hope all kids will learn about. The performance was excellent as well.

I loved the picturesque details and poetic descriptions of their relationship. The pacing and chapter structure could’ve been a little bit more developed or altered, but all in all it was a beautiful, descriptive, and heartfelt story of love and perseverance.

Beautiful story though there is tragedy there is strength. This story brought tears to my eyes but I was so joyful of the strength that was told.
