Legal Immigrant is Alan Cumming's collection of musings on his experiences as a US citizen, growing older, and what it feels like to be an immigrant in today's America, featuring songs and stories that are as eclectic and idiosyncratic as Alan himself. The audio, recorded live at the Minetta Lane Theatre, is a smorgasbord of genres, styles, and tales. Replete with laughter, tears and, of course, provocation, featuring covers of songs made famous by a diverse array of musical legends.

Come one, come all
There are few greater showmen around than Alan Cumming. He can act, sing, and dance, and let’s not forget his razor-sharp wit. And he’s never afraid to share his opinion, as he does in Legal Immigrant, exploring how his life as a Scotland-born naturalized American citizen has impacted him and shaped his views on current immigration policies. His politics are clear and so is his talent. Cumming performed and recorded the show at the Minetta Lane Theatre, eliciting laughter and poignant moments of connection, while interspersing his story with an eclectic selection of songs that lend to the theme and mood. It felt like I spent a couple of wonderful hours at a fabulous cabaret show that you now also get to experience.

In my own home I've had arguments with my mother who, though a Democrat, sees immigrants as threats. Not all immigrants, mostly the little brown people coming over the Mexican border. Her argument is that our ancestors assimilated. My argument is that it's hard for people with dark tans to assimilate with people descended from white European immigrants. Also not included in her argument is that during WWII, many German-Americans assimilated in self-defense, not wanting to be compared to the German NAZIs we were fighting.
But, I digress. If you love Alan Cumming's charming, irreverent sense of humor and don't mind the music as some reviewers seem to, you'll love this Audible offering. I know I do. It's a good reminder that if one is not Native American, one is descended from immigrants. Alan also recognizes those whose ancestors were most likely brought here against their will -- not an immigration choice, Kanye.
