Wonderful spin on Vampire stories
Revisado: 10-17-22
Some reviews have complained about the background effects making the dialog hard to hear. this may be true once or twice, but overall the sound effects contribute to, not detract from the performance. There are also a few "flashback" scenes that use distorted audio. Nothing terrible. It allows you to know it's something other than what's really happening right now. Over all, it's a good performance. the actors do a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. And the story itself is very well done. I'm only disappointed that there isn't more. This feels like the first part of a larger trilogy... that doesn't exist yet. So I'll have to keep my fingers crossed.

Mixed feelings about this one.
Revisado: 10-30-20
The "starting with the ending" mechanic, along with the reading the character's story from within the story was a bit confusing. There are also several zig-zagging twists that I didn't especially like towards the end. Over all, the story was ok... but not great. And while the narrators did a wonderful job (Stefan's voice is AMAZING)... there are some very noticeable cuts in the recording where different recording sessions didn't match up well. I'm not sure it's worth investing the time and money in the other 3 novels.

Historia
Dante and Blays have a single hope of victory: the Spear of Stars, the long-lost weapon that may be capable of killing the lich. There's just one problem. Though they've learned the spear is real, they've also learned the nine parts of the weapon are guarded by the gods themselves. And they have no intention of handing over their prize. Alone in a strange realm, with no friends or allies, and a growing list of enemies, Dante and Blays' task looks doomed. Yet, they're the last line standing between the lich and the destruction of their whole world.

Fantastic installment of the Galland series.
Revisado: 05-13-20
This novel did a wonderful job of tying up several long-running storylines. Admittedly, some parts were a little hard to follow as I couldn't remember what the references were to. Who was that guy? Where did that come from? When did THAT happen? But it was still very satisfying to come to a point that didn't feel like a "to be continued" episode. Clearly, there's going to be more to the story... but it's not wrapped up in a thousand years of mythology of the White Lich, and the realm of the gods. As always, Tim Gerard Reynolds does a fantastic job of bringing all the characters to life. I've said several times that one of the best parts of the series is the banter between Dante, Blays and Gladych. And that banter is due in no small party to Tim's wonderful performance.

Historia
In the year 2243, the Moon belongs to the dead. The largest graveyard in the solar system, it was the perfect solution to the overcrowding and environmental problems that had plagued mankind for centuries. And the perfect place for Cali Washington to run away from her past. But when a mysterious meteor crashes into one of the Moon’s cemeteries, Cali and her fellow Caretakers find themselves surrounded by a terrifying enemy force that outnumbers them more than a thousand to one. An enemy not hindered by the lack of air or warmth or sustenance. An enemy that is already dead.

A sharp left turn?
Revisado: 02-06-20
Although this book is considered part of the Threshold series... it feels like a pretty substantial divergence from the first 2 books. It takes place at a different time, in the future up in the Moon. There are no readily apparent connections to Tesla, or his machine, or interdimensional beings that threaten reality from the first 2 books.
This one is about a meteor that make zombies out of dead people buried on the moon. I dislike unexplained phenomena, and this book is full of it. Why are we burying people on the moon in the first place?!) The mechanics of the threat leaves me disappointed also. Like why the zombies are smart enough to open doors and remove space suit helmets... but not smart enough to climb a ladder? This novel doesn't seem to add anything to the mythos of this series, and might have been better off as a single novel (with a few more tweaks).
Ray Porter does a fine job of bringing the characters to life, and maintaining everybody's individual personalities through accents and speech patterns.
Luckily Book 4: Terminus, brings the storyline back onto the rails once again.

Wonderful addition to the series!
Revisado: 02-06-20
As usual, Ray Porter provides an excellent performance. This entry into the series brings back several of the classic elements that I enjoyed from the first two books. (I was not a huge fan of #3: Dead Moon) A couple of the same characters, a couple of new characters, a few references to previous books, and some wonderful additions to the mythos behind this world. (or would that be worlds, plural?) There are a couple of plot twists that are done very well. They're not too complicated that they can't be understood, but not so simple that you see them coming from a mile away. This novel also opens up more possibilities for the future of the series. I was very entertained, and look forward to the next book in the series!

Historia
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

Sad story of sad lives... but hypnotic!
Revisado: 01-19-19
I liked the story, in a voyeuristic way. The subject matter, the suicide of a porn star, is very intriguing because it's so far from what most people know. A window on lives that seem so different... but Jon Ronson does a wonderful job of brining these personal details to the listener in a very relatable way. I really feel bad for August Ames, who at only 23, couldn't take any more.
Sadness... loneliness... denial... anger... blame... and the wondering what I would have done if I were him... or her... or one of them... and who's really to blame, if anyone is to blame.
Definitely worth a listen.

Historia
The White Lich has conquered Tanar Atain. Soon, he means to take the entire world. Dante suspects his next target will be Bressel, where the Tanarians have established their court in exile. The only chance to stop the lich will be to forge a fragile alliance between the bitter enemies of three different lands: Tanar Atain, Mallon, and Narashtovik. The city stands on the brink of rebellion. Yet even if Dante, Blays, and Gladdic can unite it, they still might not have the strength to stand against the army of the lich.

Thrilled, as I was with the last book... the ending snuck up on me. I wasn't ready for it to be over. So it was so great to be able to pick up this next volume.
Dante and Blays continue their struggle against the White Lich... and wind up going further than they had ever imagined. They bring with them all of the wonderful skills that they have developed, as well as that incredible banter than we have come to love. And they will need both as they continue their journey. I already can't wait for book 6!

Good story, but a bad production.
Revisado: 09-17-18
This audio book is old. It sounds like it's been re-recorded on cassette tape a few too many times.
The story is good... but the tinny sound only makes the narrator's voice sound so much worse. She does a great job on the accents... and with a better recording her sometimes higher voice wouldn't be a problem. But this was hard. and towards the end of the book, there were a few garbled sections of the recording that really annoyed the hell out of me.
This audio book needs an update!

Better than the TV show!
Revisado: 05-16-18
As a fan of the television show, after hearing that it was going to be cancelled, I decided to start listening to the audio books. I'm very pleased to say the audiobook met my expectations. Well performed, and although the story was not a surprise, the subtle differences between TV show and novel kept it an enjoyable experience.
I've always downloaded the second book in the series, and will continue with the rest of the series after that.
