Historia
Tommy Tomlinson was watching a dog show on television a few years ago when he had a sudden thought: Are those dogs happy? How about pet dogs—are they happy? Those questions sparked a quest to venture inside the dog-show world, in search of a deeper understanding of the longtime relationship between dogs and humans, and here, in Dogland he shares his surprising, entertaining, and moving adventures.

good story but mixed message
Revisado: 05-01-24
the narrator does a very good job, the book of over all entertaining and gives a quick overview of dog shows, nothing technical but it would give a non dog show person an idea of what's going on. however most of the book has a distinctly anti dog show, anti purebred dog, anti preservation breeding vibe that would cause me to not recommend this book to anyone.

Historia
Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

biased and Contradictory
Revisado: 01-04-24
This entire book is biased on the authors preferred training method and strongly against anything else, which the author admits to never even trying. The author also completely ignores 2 of the 4 behavior quadrants that are the expressed based of the training promoted. There are also many major contraditions throughout the text. Worse dog training/behavior book I have ever read. Don't waste your time.

doesn't stay on topic
Revisado: 12-27-23
the information in this book is interesting, but if you're looking for a book about the history of the dog this isn't it. The author spends more time talking about the history of humans without bringing it back to dogs. Also there are very long sections on dingos and Australia which seems to conclude that dingos aren't fully dogs which makes them off topic to take up such a large portion of this book.

Historia
That the dog evolved from the wolf is an accepted fact of evolution and history, but the question of how wolf became dog has remained a mystery, obscured by myth and legend. How the Dog Became the Dog posits that dog was an evolutionary inevitability in the nature of the wolf and its human soul mate. The natural temperament and social structure of humans and wolves are so similar that as soon as they met on the trail they recognized themselves in each other.

good information but needs less opinions
Revisado: 12-15-23
this book is overall good with lots of good historical and scientific information. the reader is clear and easy to understand. My only complaint is the authors clear dislike for purebred dogs and his not recognizing that their is a large difference between modern purebred and modern well-bred dogs and that all of his criticisms of purebred dogs can be placed squarely on BYB, puppymills and designer dog breeders and not with modern preservation breeders who are still breeding for the betterment of the dog.

nice try, but need guests who know the topic
Revisado: 08-04-23
This podcast came highly recommended from a friend. however, this particular topic was not well covered with incorrect information from where standards come from, to how shows run and points are accumulated, to info on individual breeds, purebred health and much much more. if your interested in dog shows please check out one of the many podcast from people actually involved in the sport.

good plan but anti AG.
Revisado: 08-01-22
I liked this book the over all message of self acceptance and focusing on natural eating and fun exercise. However the anti meat, anti diary, anti ag message turned me off. also much of the studies cited sound more like correlations than causation.

Historia
An award-winning historian tells the story of hunting in America, showing how this sport has shaped our national identity. From Daniel Boone to Teddy Roosevelt, hunting is one of America's most sacred - but also most fraught - traditions. It was promoted in the 19th century as a way to reconnect "soft" urban Americans with nature and to the legacy of the country's pathfinding heroes. Fair chase, a hunting code of ethics emphasizing fairness, rugged independence, and restraint towards wildlife, emerged as a worldview and gave birth to the conservation movement.

not how I expected it to end.
Revisado: 09-13-20
I really enjoyed most of this books telling of the history and culture of hunting. It covered details of this topic I was not familiar with. I also found some further reading material from it. however the end of the book and especially the epilogue were an unexpected turn into the animal rights agenda, I was sadly disappointed in this turn of events.
