Historia
In Bomb Power, Garry Wills reveals how the atomic bomb transformed our nation down to its deepest constitutional roots - by dramatically increasing the power of the modern presidency and redefining the government as a national security state---in ways still felt today. A masterful reckoning from one of America's preeminent historians, Bomb Power draws a direct line from the Manhattan Project to the usurpations of George W. Bush.

An Informative Account
Revisado: 03-09-23
This is an informative account of how the imperial presidency, national security state, and misuse of secrecy for both illegal and unwise government activities grew out of the challenges posed by managing nuclear weapons and the Cold War.

Lea Ypi grew up in the last Stalinist country in Europe: Albania, a place of queuing and scarcity, of political executions and secret police. While family members disappeared to what she was told were "universities" from which few "graduated," she swore loyalty to the Party. In her eyes, people were equal, neighbors helped each other, and children were expected to build a better world.

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

This book provides a well-researched, nuanced case for why collecting gender-disaggregated data and including women as equal decision-makers across all levels of society is essential to building a healthier, wealthier, more peaceful, and more just world.

Historia
Few were ready when a mysterious respiratory illness emerged in Wuhan, China, in January 2020. Politicians, government officials, business leaders, and public-health professionals were unprepared for the most devastating pandemic in a century. Many of the world’s biggest drug and vaccine makers were slow to react or couldn’t muster an effective response. It was up to a small group of unlikely and untested scientists and executives to save civilization.

Revisado: 02-26-22
This book provides a fantastic job telling both the scientific and the human stories behind the creation of the leading COVID-19 vaccines. I especially appreciated the author’s ability to tie together the many threads from different parts of a complicated story into a coherent tapestry.

Historia
With growing academic responsibilities, family commitments, and inboxes, scholars are struggling to fulfill their writing goals. A finished book - or even steady journal articles - may seem like an impossible dream. But, as Joli Jensen proves, it really is possible to write happily and productively in academe. Jensen begins by busting the myth that universities are supportive writing environments. She points out that academia, an arena dedicated to scholarship, offers pressures that actually prevent scholarly writing.

Very insightful
Revisado: 12-06-21
This is an insightful, fair-minded account of many of the policy and operational failures that left the US so vulnerable to COVID-19. My main criticism is that Dr. Gottlieb seems to focus on the very real mistakes made by the CDC to the exclusion of other important mistakes made by the FDA, the White House, state governors and legislators, and Congress.

Historia
Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their PhDs. And each year only a small percentage of them will land jobs that justify and reward their investments. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts and many more who simply give up in frustration. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help job seekers join the select few who get the most out of their PhDs.

Useful for junior scholars
Revisado: 11-01-21
This book is definitely useful for junior scholars in a variety of disciplines who are seeking tenure-track academic positions. Just keep in mind that the author’s occasionally semi-apocalyptic tone (geared towards scholars in the humanities facing a very difficult job market) may or may not apply to your discipline.

Historia
In flow, everyday experience becomes a moment by moment opportunity for joy and self-fulfillment. Flow is the brain-child of a fascinating psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a renowned social scientist who has devoted his life's work to the study of what makes people truly happy, satisfied and fulfilled. While much of the study of psychology investigates disorders of the human mind, Dr. Csikszentmihalyi takes a different route.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 06-22-21
I was expecting this book to summarize the scientific research on flow. Instead, it consisted largely of the personal reflections of the author. While those reflections were perfectly pleasant and at times insightful, those interested in a more scientifically rigorous treatment of this topic should look elsewhere.

The guru to the gurus at last shares his knowledge with the rest of us. Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking. Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains....
