Historia
Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.

Narrator isn't near as bad as the reviews claim.
Revisado: 03-25-25
Let me preface by saying I fully understand that narration can be an extremely subjective thing. What one person finds unbearable might not bother the next person in the slightest. So take anything I say as wholly a personal take and, by no means, am I saying that anyone that I disagree with is wrong in any way.
I genuinely hesitated to put this book on due it the reviews of the narrator. Went ahead with it anyways but was completely ready to hate the experience. Turns out she did a more than acceptable job with the book. I don't know if the reviewers were expecting some over the top, overly acted dramatization but I found that her performance fit the tone of the book well. I even tried listening for the mispronunciations that were claimed and nothing I heard was a bother to me. Happy to have listened!

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Outstanding story and even better narration.
Revisado: 03-05-24
I have been wanting to check this book out for quite a while now. Finally pulled the trigger and couldn't be more happy with the results. The story was wonderful. Very sad and very difficult to know that people really went through these hard times and more. Nevertheless, it was told in a fantastic way and I really came to care for quite a lot of the characters. Even some of the smaller ones. The narration was top tier in my opinion and I really with Baker narrated more of Steinbeck's work. Highly recommended.

Tracing his ancestory through six generations - slaves and freedmen, farmers and blacksmiths, lawyers and architects - back to Africa, Alex Haley discovered a sixteen-year-old youth, Kunta Kinte. It was this young man, who had been torn from his homeland and and in torment and anguish brought to the slave markets of the New World, who held the key to Haley's deep and distant past.

Historia
For 31 years, a monster terrorized the residents of Wichita, Kansas. A bloodthirsty serial killer, self-named "BTK" - for "bind them, torture them, kill them" - he slaughtered men, women, and children alike, eluding the police for decades while bragging of his grisly exploits to the media. The nation was shocked when the fiend who was finally apprehended turned out to be Dennis Rader - a friendly neighbor...a devoted husband...a helpful Boy Scout dad...the respected president of his church. Written by four award-winning crime reporters who covered the story for more than 20 years, Bind, Torture, Kill is the most intimate and complete account of the BTK nightmare

Absolutely outstanding!!
Revisado: 07-31-20
To date, this has been one of my absolute favorite true crime books! Wonderfully written, expertly narrated, and a great listen all around. I thought, at first, that the bits about the LEOs and their work was going to be boring. I mean, like most folks, I was here for the crazy insights to a madman. But wow, by the end, I actually had chill bumps leading up to the big bust! I vary highly recommend this to absolutely anyone who is a true crime fan!

Folks, I could listen to Asa tell her stories nonstop for hours! Incredibly entertaining and articulate and at the same time, so laid back and relaxed. Veronica Worthington did a magnificent job narrating an already highly enjoyable book. Overall, I have zero complaints and nothing but high praise for the writing and narration! Highly recommended!

Surprisingly entertaining!
Revisado: 05-11-20
This was a book I acquired via Audible Originals and wasn't really sure I'd ever even get around to listening to it. Well, I listened to it last night at work and I was thoroughly entertained through the entire story! Very well written story. Simple and easy to follow but still intriguing and suspenseful. The sign (for me personally) of a really gripping story is when I am constantly running ahead trying to figure out the "whodunnit" of the situation and I found myself doing this constantly. Going over what I knew back and forth trying to solve it before the actual reveal. Not to mention the narration was an absolute A+!! Aimee Horne did a top notch job! This would have been a great read even if I had an idea of what I was getting into. The fact that I went in completely blind made it sooooo much better! A very surprising gem indeed, this book! Highly recommend!

Wish this was the other narrator.
Revisado: 05-11-20
This was my second book in the Hannibal Jones series. I enjoyed both books more than expected but the one thing I can say about this one is that I wish the narrator from the other book I listed to worked on this one as well. To be specific, I didn't have any real problems with Neil Reeves but I really enjoyed Royal Jays reading of Damaged Goods much more. Again, the story was entertaining and the reading was adequate. I just preferred the other. Would love to check out more from the series!

With dramatic flair, Jeff Guinn delivers the definitive portrait of Bonnie and Clyde. These media-savvy outlaws appealed to America's Depression-era hunger for swashbuckling characters. Glowing radio and newspaper reports transformed these "public enemies" into celebrities - much like the cinema gangsters of the time.

Absolutely loved it!!
Revisado: 05-11-20
Honestly, this book was bought on a bit of a whim. After listening to the Merle Haggard song randomly one night, I realized I knew the basic gist of the Bonnie and Clyde story but no real details. This was the perfect remedy. These were incredibly interesting people and their crime spree was absolutely fascinating. I fully understand that they weren't justified in a lot of their actions but it was really fun for me to be able to flesh out the individuals as more than just characters but actual people, living and breathing with faults and all. This has been one of my favorite audio books to date.
Side note: I read reviews about the narration being sub par but I could not disagree more. I found zero problems in that area and I am very picky about it. That being said, everyone has a different ear for things but my own personal experience was nothing but positive with this book all around!

Three Fantastic Lecturers, + one iffy one.

Very entertaining and incredibly informative!!
Revisado: 04-21-20
First and foremost, this was a very outstanding collection of well informed and put together lectures. I was wary at first due to some of the reviews I read. Once I got into it all worries were gone.
I knew I would enjoy the Greek mythologies lecture because that was where my main interests were and the biggest reason I bought the book. Based on the reviews, I wasn't expecting to appreciate the African lectures much but surprisingly they were one of my favorite. The bigger surprise was the Asian mythologies. I thought I would absolutely love that series but I, for whatever reason, just couldn't get into it. Personal preference, I'm sure. That is no commentary on the lectures themselves or the narration of them. The American mythologies were another series I wasn't sure about but was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed them.
Overall, a very well presented series of lectures given by knowledgeable speakers that are easy to follow and understand.

Revisado: 03-17-20
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I first started it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I quite enjoyed it for the most part. There were times that it seemed a bit disorganized and the time line shifted a lot without warning but that didn't detract much from the story. Pretty well written and narrated as well. I found myself rooting for a bit of a different ending but the one I was given fit the narrative and was more realistic which I can appreciate. Overall, I found the book to be an enjoyable experience.
