Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Parable, Allegory, Warning
Revisado: 10-22-24
Butler predicted the MAGA slogan, extremist politicians leveraging nation-worshipping Christians, the growing wealth disparity, women’s reproductive rights and bodily autonomy, flimsy and permeable legislation, gutting the space program, educational censorship under the guidance of concerned conservatives in the government, forced patriotism, policy choices leading to debt slavery and the perpetuation of class division, police brutality and corruption, state-ordained detention and family separation, including child abduction, culture cleansing, reeducation, and foster placement, abuse of power, sex trafficking rings, rape, child molestation, torture…
And this is just the first half of the second book.
The similarities between Butler’s predicted world of the late 2010s through 2060 is relevant and shockingly similar to the 45th president of the United States’ tenure. Butler could not have fathomed the accuracy of her predictive fiction, which is both validating and alarming.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HORSE?
Revisado: 11-27-23
I’ve heard it said that authors should never put something into a story that isn’t necessary and if they have to, always tie it up. Without spoiling anything, there were a couple of items seemingly irrelevant to the plot that were just kinda left out there for the listener to wonder about. Maybe those things will show up in the following books.

Soft and fluffy apocalypse
Revisado: 11-22-23
I kept waiting for something to happen, but the entire story was solving one logistics issue to the next. Kudos to Scott Brick for sticking to it and narrating the entire story. He probably needed a whole lot of water to get through all that desert dry content. Really, this book was one h*ck of a slog.

But as a law professor working for the Innocence Project, Boady agrees to look into Elijah’s file. When he does, he is alarmed to find threads that lead back to the death of his colleague and friend, Ben Pruitt, a man shot to death four years earlier in Boady’s own home.

Another Eskens hit!
Revisado: 09-25-23
I can’t help but be drawn to Eskens’ writing style. His characters are so thoughtfully shaped, their stories told as vividly as if I were right along for the ride. Each of Eskens’ books have enthralled me from start to finish. I cannot stress enough how excellent his works are, and I hope that more will come after Saving Emma.
Ps: Mammon and Baal (if not spelled differently than the written version) are two very clever and apt names in regards to the grifting of public trust. Thank you Mr. Eskens for the tongue and cheek acknowledgement!

It was a good story until…
Revisado: 04-05-22
Somewhere along part 2 when Savage decided to drop more and more microaggressive hints about his feelings toward the LGBTQIA+ community. Initially I cheered when Savage modified one of his characters as transitioning M-F. Unfortunately, he continually referred to them as he/him even though Savage clearly stated on more than one occasion that his character was mid-transition from male to female. Savage’s failure to follow through with his character’s gender identity – Including respecting her –was problematic & disgusting. Not only did he allude to being overtly transphobic, but also chose a hateful homophonic slur to describe someone’s clothing. Savage certainly highlighted his own backwards ideology. Terribly disappointing.

Historia
As with many self-destructive kids, Noah Levine's search for meaning led him first to punk rock, drugs, drinking, and dissatisfaction. But the search didn't end there. Having clearly seen the uselessness of drugs and violence, Noah looked for positive ways to channel his rebellion against what he saw as the lies of society. Fueled by his anger at so much injustice and suffering, Levine now uses that energy and the practice of Buddhism to awaken his natural wisdom and compassion.

Problem with the audio
Revisado: 09-20-20
The 3-D audio is a gimmick. It did not work. Much of the dialogue gets drowned out by unimportant background noise.
