Historia
Who you want people to be makes you blind to who they really are. It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan — a Berkeley mom with an enviable life — went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her body was never found, just a shattered cellphone and a solitary hiking boot. Her husband and teenage daughter have been coping with Billie’s death the best they can: Jonathan drinks as he works on a loving memoir about his marriage; Olive grows remote, from both her father and her friends at the all-girls school she attends.

It’s nice to find a domestic thriller that isn’t just about an abusive man. This one kept me interested and guessing.

Historia
Perla Wultz lives with her husband, Grant, and their precious daughter, Sophie, in a gated Pasadena community. Affluent, sociable, and accomplished, Perla plays the part of loving wife and mother to perfection. It seems an ideal life, if not for a decades-old crime that has become Perla’s dark and consuming secret obsession. Twenty-three years ago, Leewood Folcrum confessed to murdering two young girls during a birthday party. Though he’s been condemned to a life sentence, his crime is not forgotten.

I didn’t really know what to expect going in but this hooked me right away and never lost steam. This one stands out from the usual domestic thrillers, not the usual thriller tropes.

Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot. Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet. Then the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of deaths across the coast—confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Freida’s worst to date
Revisado: 12-04-24
Freida’s books always feel a bit juvenile and uninspired to me, but the twists keep me coming back for more. This one wasn’t worth the slog as I found myself rolling my eyes nearly every paragraph over both the characters’ decisions and the lazy writing. I’ve never read a more maddeningly naive character than the protagonist…in fact there really wasn’t a single redeemable character in the book. If I didn’t know better I would’ve thought this was Freida’s first book, not her most recent.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

I loved everything about this book. The characters were realistic, the storyline moved along at a nice pace, and the performance was wonderful. This was a feel good read with a couple good lessons without feeling heavy handed or cringey.

Worst Freida so far
Revisado: 09-25-24
I usually love Freida McFadden for her insane plot twists but this one didn’t have anything unexpected. On top of that, most big plot points were rushed through while the mundane dragged on. Very limited character development and the healthcare workers were also portrayed in a harshly negative light which was an odd choice. Overall a dud.

Middle of the road mystery/thriller
Revisado: 09-16-24
Certain aspects kept me guessing and the story did have a conclusion, though I didn’t find it particularly satisfying. I would’ve liked a couple of the characters fleshed out more thoroughly. Maybe could have benefitted from including the son’s first person perspective as well.
