Historia
In late September 2015, Hurricane Joaquin swept past the Bahamas and swallowed a pair of cargo vessels in its destructive path: El Faro, a 790-foot American behemoth with a crew of 33, and the Minouche, a 230-foot freighter with a dozen sailors aboard. From the parallel stories of these ships and their final journeys, Tristram Korten weaves a remarkable tale of two veteran sea captains from very different worlds, the harrowing ordeals of their desperate crews, and the Coast Guard’s extraordinary battle against a storm that defied prediction.

Great book, fantastic narrator
Revisado: 01-13-25
This book was very thoroughly researched and thoughtfully presented. It was a little slow starting out, but necessary. I’ve found a new favorite narrator! He reminds me of Casey Kasem.

Repetitive
Revisado: 01-05-25
While the audiobook was educational, it was highly repetitive and dry, almost like a Wiki or AI version. The introduction repeated itself 5 or 6 times. Each of the chapters are very much copy and paste. I did learn new things though!

Historia
New York, 1998. Santiago Larrea, a wealthy Argentine diplomat, is holding court alongside his wife, Lila, and their daughter, Paloma, a college student and budding jewelry designer, at their annual summer polo match and soiree. All seems perfect in the Larreas’ world—until an unexpected party guest from Santiago's university days shakes his usually unflappable demeanor. The woman's cryptic comments spark Paloma’s curiosity about her father’s past, of which she knows little. Paloma is determined to learn more about his life in the years leading up to the dictatorship of 1976.

Melodramatic. Narrator sounds like Alexa.
Revisado: 11-22-22
The narrator seriously sounds like an AI reader. I nearly returned the book after the first chapter due to her robotic tone, but decided to stick it out in case the book itself was good. Nope, it’s not any better. I have no real sense of any of the characters. Situations are very unrealistic. The ending is ridiculous.

Is there such thing as a Western Taoist? Benjamin Hoff says there is, and this Taoist's favorite food is honey.

Awful
Revisado: 07-12-20
I bought this thinking it would be a fun bit of fluff amidst my deeper philosophy listens. Nope. Pooh in name only. The characters have been warped to fit to story. Eyeore has been changed into a bitter, hateful creature. The book mocks other viewpoints, insisting it’s way is the only way and anything else will essentially end the world. I ended up cranking up the play speed to get done faster. Go find your Tao elsewhere.

Great book, not a good fit for the narrator
Revisado: 02-25-20
Fantastic book if you are into true crime. Be warned it is graphic and be hard to stomach. The narrator is ok but not for this book. Not great with male voices. She would be great for chick lit or lighter novels.

In the summer of 1937, Amelia Earhart is the most famous woman in the world - a record-breaking pilot, a best-selling author, and a modern woman shattering the glass ceiling in the early days of aviation. And then she vanishes. In Tampa, Florida, 15-year-old Lizzie Friedlander spends her afternoons glued to her father’s radio, tapping into the enormity of a world she longs to travel. Lizzie can hardly believe her ears when she picks up a radio signal from a faraway source that sets her heart racing: “Amelia Earhart calling SOS!”

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Sex, sex, drugs and more drugs, bad decisions, more sex with strangers, and some hiking. Trigger warning for abuse and botched killing of a horse. Lousy book.
