Historia
Thurgood Marshall brought down the separate-but-equal doctrine, integrated schools, and not only fought for human rights and human dignity but also made them impossible to deny in the courts and in the streets. In this stunning new biography, award-winning author Wil Haygood surpasses the emotional impact of his inspiring best seller The Butler to detail the life and career of one of the most transformative legal minds of the past 100 years.

Entertaining and useful but becomes Hagiography
Revisado: 10-31-24
It’s interesting and informative to hear all the background behind Thurgood Marshall’s supreme court nomination. Unfortunately, the author’s political bias gets in the way from time to time. For example, Clarence Thomas is described as unimpressive, unprepared and even a “snake”.
That’s too bad, because there is a lot of good stuff in the book. The author presents fascinating background stories on many people involved in the nomination of Marshall. I learned more about the senators, President Johnson and Marshall himself; but I started to get the feel that I was looking at Marshall through rose-colored glasses.
About halfway through, I started to ask myself, “Am I reading a biography or a hagiography?” The answer became clear in the epilogue, in which the term “saint” was actually used. Perhaps future generations of biographers will be more comfortable presenting all facets of this fascinating and courageous man.

Historia
First published in 1952, Witness came on the heals of America's trial of the century, in which Whittaker Chambers accused Alger Hiss, a full-standing member of the political establishment, of spying for the Soviet Union. In this penetrating philosophical memoir, Chambers recounts the famous case as well as his own experiences as a Communist agent in the United States, his later renunciation of communism, and his conversion to Christianity.

Very good for its time.
Revisado: 02-10-23
This is a classic work, showing how many people from the mid-20th century viewed the war. It is too easy on the Rebels, still influenced by Lost Cause mythology. It goes to great lengths describing the suffering of people in the Shenandoah and doesn’t speak a word about the suffering of the enslaved. Those who escape are denigrated or even mocked. Those who volunteered in the US Army are called “contrabands”. This tells a rich story, but I’m glad it has been superseded by more recent historians, such McPherson.
Still, Catton weaves a compelling tale and fills it with personalities and details. Definitely worth the read, but it should not be the only book read, and it’s not the most authoritative.

Historia
For over a decade, philosopher and energy expert Alex Epstein has predicted that any negative impacts of fossil fuel use on our climate will be outweighed by the unique benefits of fossil fuels to human flourishing--including their unrivaled ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy to billions of people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people. And contrary to what we hear from media “experts” about today’s “renewable revolution” and “climate emergency,” reality has proven Epstein right.

Revisado: 05-23-22
Excellent story and many details. Short shrift is given to Jackson, and to ordinary people in general - the ones who loved Jackson - almost to the point of elitism.
However, the portrait of Adams is rich, uplifting and inspiring. He is honored properly, and I was challenged to be a better person.

Numerous mistakes. Southern Whitewash
Revisado: 04-30-22
I became suspicious in the first chapter, when he spoke of how “radicals” wanted to immediately eliminate slavery after the Civil War.
It did not get much better. Nathan Bedford Forrest comes off better than William Tecumseh Sherman.
I can understand some criticism of Sherman, but Forrest is presented as a “self-made man” because he made a fortune in the slave trade.
This is certainly better than some of the lost cause myth publications, but not by a lot. I was disappointed.

Historia
In the spring of 1864, Robert E. Lee faced a new adversary: Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. Named commander of all Union armies in March, Grant quickly went on the offensive against Lee in Virginia. On May 4th, Grant's army struck hard across the Rapidan River into north central Virginia, with Lee's army contesting every mile. They fought for 40 days until, finally, the Union army crossed the James River and began the siege of Petersburg. The campaign cost 90,000 men - the largest loss the war had seen.

Too much southern propaganda
Revisado: 01-24-22
It’s interesting and entertaining, but it is full of southern propaganda. For example, the author neglected to tell us that Nathan Bedford Forrest murdered surrendering blacks. Instead, he says the people of the north accused Forest of this. The fact is that Forest did it, and there is a lot of documentation. The author also neglects to mention that forest later created the Ku Klux Klan.
He also idealizes Lee, a mediocre general who lost a very winnable war and sent free people into slavery during his failed invasions.
Finally, he overstates federal casualties and understates confederate losses.

Historia
The former Confederate states have continually mythologized the South's defeat to the North, depicting the Civil War as unnecessary, or as a fight over states' Constitutional rights, or as a David v. Goliath struggle in which the North waged "total war" over an underdog South. In The Myth of the Lost Cause, historian Edward Bonekemper deconstructs this multi-faceted myth, revealing the truth about the war that nearly tore the nation apart 150 years ago.
