Acerca de esta escucha

First published in 1952, Witness came on the heals of America's trial of the century, in which Whittaker Chambers accused Alger Hiss, a full-standing member of the political establishment, of spying for the Soviet Union.

In this penetrating philosophical memoir, Chambers recounts the famous case as well as his own experiences as a Communist agent in the United States, his later renunciation of communism, and his conversion to Christianity. Chambers' worldview - "man without mysticism is a monster" - helped to make political conservatism a national force. Witness packs the emotional wallop and the literary power of a classic Russian novel and has gained Chambers recognition by critics on both sides of the spectrum as a truly gifted writer.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"One of the few indispensable autobiographies ever written by an American - and one of the best written too.... It deserves to be recognized as a first class achievement." ( New Centurion)
"Confession, history, potboiler - by a man who writes like the literary giant we would know him as, had not Communism got him first." ( Christopher Caldwell, National Review, 100 Best Non-Fiction Books of the Century)
"This many-dimensioned apologia, which is also a spy drama, a Quaker testament, and a spiritual autobiography, telescopes the major political and religious conflicts of the century." ( Booklist)
Compelling Autobiography • Insightful Historical Account • Superb Narration • Courageous Protagonist • Eloquent Prose

Once I started this book I could not stop. It is both frightening and hopeful; frightening because of how fragile and gullible we human beings are, and how easily we can lose our sense of right and wrong so that swallowing lock, stock and barrel some infinitely insane philosophy seems like the right thing to do. Hopeful because basically I believe human beings are good and smart and really do know right from wrong, even if it takes them a while to figure it all out. I hope we all figure it out before it is too late. Please please please read this book so you know how to recognize what is happening to America even now. I know you are basically good. Don't lose track of that!

This book is worth listening to for the quality of the prose alone. The depth of its narrative is equal to Darkness at Noon. Chambers' character is marked by great courage and decency.

What made the experience of listening to Witness the most enjoyable?

The narrator truly seemed to bring the characters to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Witness?

The deep insight into why the left circled the wagons around those accused of communism, from the ultimate insider in espionage, the intellectual circles, and the media.

Have you listened to any of John MacDonald’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

The book is incredibly helpful in shedding light on a difficult time in world and US history. Chambers does not caricature his characters. He explains patiently and sensibly the reasons people did what they did, both good and bad, and actually creates a more three-dimensional picture even of his opponents, so you can sympathize with their goals, even as you abhor their means and results. His philosophical outlook on every aspect of the story reminded me of Leo Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, and while some might find those aspects dry, to me it was incredibly enlightening and added depth to a fascinating story.

A profound exploration of history

Any additional comments?

I thought it was an interesting self-portrait of a man who, in writing the book, made his best-impassioned case in self-defense of his acts. Chambers was exquisite and refined, clear and thoughtful. It's no wonder he climbed the ladder of success at Time Magazine like he did. Alger Hiss vastly underestimated his friend slash foe. The narration was spot on, old school style too. I felt I was transported to a different time and place.

One of the most fascinating books I've ever read.
Just like an incredible spy novel.
But it's not a novel.
It's all absolutely true.
Relates details of Soviet espionage in the thirties.
Senator Joseph McCarthy was absolutely correct when he said there were numerous communist in the State Department.
If anything he underestimated the penetration.

Fascinating!

Very important and little known book. You will learn the real reason why the left was actually out to destroy Nixon.

Important book.

Fantastic insights and first-hand account from an eloquently inspiring author. Chambers tells the story of Communism in America as no one else can. This is a classic that deserves an honored place in American History Studies.

Unparalleled American Classic

While listening to Chambers story of persecution by the elite or deep state of the time it is chilling to see history repeating in our time.

History appears to be repeating
