Historia
Once upon a time there was a happy family: A mom, a dad, a gerbil, and the most beautifulest, cleverest, ever so kindest princess. On one horrible day, a new ruler is born into the young princess's family - a ruler she dubs His Royal Highness, King Baby. This small interloper is so smelly. He is so noisy. And all the talk in the Land is about him ("Such a nice burp!" "Oh, what a lovely poo-poo!"), nonstop, all the time! Has there ever been such an era of wicked rule?

What a delightful way to portray the jealousy (and love!) of a big sister.

Historia
Almost every Christian denomination practices at least two sacraments: communion and baptism. In this excerpt from the book "Solid Ground", Mr. Clay discusses the different modes of water baptism, and what is important -- and not important -- for the believer to understand. As in all the "Solid Ground" titles, Mr. Clay tackles a difficult topic in a book small enough to be read in one sitting, and yet he discusses the topic thoroughly enough that no other book may be necessary!

Horrible!
Revisado: 11-06-24
The main argument of the author, and it appears a few times, is really "if you feel like God told you to do it [whichever way is not important], then it's right."
I honestly expected much better.

Historia
There is a missing force in Christianity today. It's a critical one, and its absence has led to weak believers, disintegrating families, ineffective churches, and a decaying culture. Without it, we lack what we need to fully live as heaven's representatives on earth. That missing force is discipleship. In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans outlines a simple, actionable definition of discipleship to help the church fulfill its calling.

Some "principles" are really a stretch and shallow
Revisado: 02-27-24
I'm glad the author read this book; I could hear what he wanted to emphasize and how he wanted to say it. This was refreshing.
I found some principle applications a little shallow, with very thin links to the Jiu-Jitsu principle referenced, and perhaps a couple of them seemed to have no clear relation to the technique being used as referent.
Overall, it was a good attempt, and there are some things that may be useful. Not sure it will be worth a second listen. Also, the book could have been shorter as some principles took too much space to say too little.

Historia
What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

Hebrew Word Study: Revealing the Heart of God is a devotional book unlike any you’ve ever heard. Most Hebrew word study books unfold like a dictionary, not really explaining the Hebrew words in light of specific Bible passages. Hebrew Word Study by Chaim Bentorah combines an in-depth look at the meanings of a variety of scriptural words and phrases in the original Hebrew with a down-to-earth application for our daily Christian experience.

The mispronunciations of the Hebrew by this reader are laughable. Using an English pronunciation on Hebrew words is ridiculous!
Dude, do NOT get paid to read something you're going to mess up so badly!
Grrrr.
Waste of money.

Revisado: 02-27-24
Listen, if you don't know anything about the Bible or Christianity, please do NOT read a book that deals with those topics!
Just hear how he pronounces the books of the Bible (Nehemiah!), One Peter? What is that? Not to mention "doctrinal," etc., etc., etc.
I had to rewind at a few places because what he read didn't make sense, until I realized the mispronunciations…
Thumbs down.

Too repetitive and with liberal tendencies
Revisado: 08-16-23
First, I have to say that I am NOT a Dispensationalist, nor a Republican; this is important because both play a bigger role in this book than the Antichrist and the False Prophet. It wouldn't be so bad that he calls Republicans on some of their controversial stances, what worries me is that he never disagrees with Democrats, not on abortion (the murder of innocent humans), nor on LGBTQ+ issues and the new (im)morality, but oh, he hammers on Trump and mentions January 6 a few times as the one event that really made him feel embarrassed as an American. OK, but I thought we were to leave Empire (i.e. the United States, according to McKnight) behind and be dissidents (if you take this word out of this commentary, the book could be easily cut by 1/3. Seriously, we got the point the first 10 times you mentioned it, enough is enough!). Why are you now trying to pretend America stands for something better than Babylon?
The same thing with Dispensationalists, we get it. I too disagree with the way they do eschatology, but come on! You dislike Tim LaHaye and the rest of them, we get it. Move on!
This tome would have benefited by a good editor cutting off all the redundant material (and there's a lot of it!).
I'm returning this one. You should skip it.
The only good thing is that I got this audio book together with "Revelation Through Old Testament Eyes" which was a lot more informative and Biblical. This last one is a keeper, McKnight's not at all.

From legendary Brazilian jujitsu and MMA master Rickson Gracie comes a riveting, insightful memoir that weaves together the story of Gracie’s stunning career with the larger history of the Gracie family dynasty and the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, showing how the connection between mind and body can be harnessed for success both inside and outside the ring.

Not family friendly
Revisado: 07-28-23
While I appreciate the candor of unveiling the many moral failings of the Gracie’s, their patriarchalism, and weird practices, the coarse language used throughout made me cringe over and over. Looking back, cursing was really not necessary to convey the author's point, nor was the use of gross language, when perfectly acceptable words and phrases were available. A good editor could have helped here.
Rorion Gracie, creator of the UFC, comes out as an opportunistic, egocentric bum who takes advantage of others over and over, one who never changed his ways. Shame on him and those who idolize him. (The same portrait is painted by a close associate of Rorion’s in a book now on Audible…).
I hoped the book would be inspirational, but it fails on that account. As a Gracie JiuJitsu practitioner, I hoped this would shed light or maybe even teach me something to better my technique, breathing, or approach. I found none of them here.
In the end, Rickson's ideals of teaching the weak to defend themselves against the strong seems dishonest since he confesses to having used JiuJitsu precisely to impose his will on others, and on some occasions to actually cause harm to anyone who "disrespected" him.
Not much here that I would want my kids to learn.

Richard Bresler was Rorion Gracie's first student in LA, and is widely recognized as the first student of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the US. His memoir, Worth Defending, chronicles his over 40 years' involvement with the Gracie family and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, including the almost 20 years he spent working closely alongside Rorion helping to grow Jiu-Jitsu through the Gracie Garages, the challenge matches, the founding of the Gracie Academy, and the inception of the UFC.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-12-23
First, because my children also practice Gracie JiuJitsu, I was hoping to listen to this story with them, but the gratuitous cursing made that impossible. I understand the need to "keep it real", but there are other ways to express yourself and make it as forceful as you want without the need to curse. This is a huge issue for me, and it stinks of disrespect for the readers.
Second, it seems there were a lot of "misunderstandings" he had with Rorion Gracie, but, for some reason didn't think of asking for clarification to gets things settled once and for all.
He does get a second star because he does acknowledge that there's disunity in the Gracie family (to the extreme of suing each other for the privilege of using the Gracie logo); however, this was a great chance to inquire about what really transpired, since he would be doing research for a book…
