Appreciate historical details. Great storyline bringing in Jewish tradition, combining with Babylonian law. Fictional characters are believable. Narrator has long pauses before foreign cities or names. Overall good.

Clara Kelley is not who they think she is. She's not the experienced Irish maid who was hired to work in one of Pittsburgh's grandest households. She's a poor farmer's daughter with nowhere to go and nothing in her pockets. But the other woman with the same name has vanished, and pretending to be her just might get Clara some money to send back home.

As with all historical novels, I admit, I wish I knew what was facts and what was fiction. This was a very well done book, performance, writing everything. I appreciate the perspectives of the times.

What an incredible piece of history woven through this book. With the narrative style and varied narrators it was easy to follow two story lines which is often a dismal feat. Thank you.

Good depiction of life on the Prairie in the 1800s
Revisado: 08-14-24
I usually really like this authors stories. And although in the end, this story turns out like I need a romance to turn out, getting there was very painful. There was conflict in almost every scene, and that is pretty heavy for a moderately light romance even a period piece.
The dialogue is very good. The narrator is very good. The anxiety that each person produces Inham or herself due to jealousy and miscommunication were hard to handle.

Story of Escape, Determination, Survival
Revisado: 12-29-23
This story is about three sisters fleeing an abusive step father. They are frequently described as intelligent and superior of mind, and in the industrious things they do in the story this is put into practice. For three very intelligent women who are destined to run a lumber empire and are running away from a step father who duped them and their mother with his charms pre-marriage and scares them frequently post-marriage, the plot is questionable. These sisters escape their bad situation, determined to find men to marry so they can scurry back to the lumber empire and run it.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Great
Revisado: 11-12-21
I love most of Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s books. I have never even heard of this story, and was looking beyond the children’s books, a secret garden, a little princess, and my favorite, Little Lord Fauntleroy when I stumbled on this gem. The performance is excellent, the story another rags to riches story, my favorite kind.

Historia
In search of adventure, 29-year-old Conor Grennan traded his day job for a year-long trip around the globe, a journey that began with a three-month stint volunteering at the Little Princes Children's Home, an orphanage in war-torn Nepal. Conor was initially reluctant to volunteer, unsure whether he had the proper skill, or enough passion, to get involved in a developing country in the middle of a civil war. But he was soon overcome by the herd of rambunctious, resilient children.

Very Unnerving
Revisado: 03-09-17
The story is very good, well-written and narrated. What is unnerving are the facts of the story itself. This young man's "adventure" eventually creates a scenario of growing up, succumbing to a worthy passion, and victory for himself and many in this journey. I highly recommend the read, not just for the interestingly told story but for the wake up call it delivers.

Quiet Little Story
Revisado: 01-09-17
This little story is short, conventional, quickly told. The characters are hardly developed, but it's "cute" for a short read/listen. It's predictable in every respect. It doesn't lag -- too short for that :) -- but there is no "antagonist" plot that is developed, either. I guess there doesn't have to be one -- it's just not a typical recipe for a story.
