Very slow burn with no actual fire
Revisado: 10-31-24
I waited so long to purchase this book and I really wanted to like it. The premise was good, new and original.
it just took SO LONG to get to where things started to get creepy and just like that it came to a head and was over. I felt like the first half if the book was more of a descriptive narrative that sort of helped you get to know the characters but didn't dig into the "spookiness" as promised.
it was good enough as an ear worm while I worked but...just not enough to keep me engrossed.

An easy listen...
Revisado: 04-04-23
I call this an easy listen because it doesn't really take much brain power.
I figured out the "shocking twist" long before it was revealed. I kept reading to see how it played out.
The narration was not horrible, but the voices didn't quite fit.
All in all, it's not a bad book if you just want to listen and not have to put much thought into it. It's not overly exciting, and I didn't feel there was a hook that made me want to seek out the other books in the series.

For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together. Historia
In the fall of 1993, the quiet suburb of Harting Farms is shocked when children begin to vanish, and one is found dead near December Park - a great, sweeping expanse that is sunken below the streets and surrounded on three sides by vast woodlands, a place children believe is haunted. Newspapers call the abductor the Piper because he has come to lead children away, while kids whisper darker names for him in the school halls. Angelo Mazzone and his friends discover a link to the dead girl and take up the search for the killer.

2nd installation.
Revisado: 10-07-22
The story can be hard to follow with jumping back and forth through time and story lines but it all eventually makes sense and ties together. I look forward to the next book.
My biggest complaint, and the one that had me really thinking about stopping the book very early on, was the narration. This guy seems to have a very limited range for voices and can get annoy AF. Glad I stuck it out but hoping the next book has a different narrator(?).

Historia
Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims' graves in remote Dread's Hand, Alaska. It's not even a town; more like the bad memory of a town. The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest. But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what's in the woods from coming out.

I recently discovered this author and am enjoying his work. This book did not disappoint, but could be a bit hard to follow. I found myself re-listening in several places to catch what I missed. all in all a good read with a few surprising twists and an open ending. Book 2, perhaps? or maybe there already is a 2 and I just haven't found it yet!!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this title from the winter sale. (2022) I was pleasantly surprised and found myself drawn in. This is an easy read that I think is good for a weekend cuddled under a warm blanket with a mug of hot cocoa!
