The queen of this unsavory neighborhood is Black Lena Shanks, whose family leads a ring of female criminals - women skilled in the art of cruelty. Absolutely Worth Listening To
Revisado: 01-19-24
This is the second audio book I’ve listened to by Michael McDowell. I loved both books. ( Cold Moon over Babylon). His stories keep you interested from beginning to end. Certainly worth listening to.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 08-17-22
I don’t care for many of Don Winslow’s books but this was pretty good. It might be because it was a short read and he had to get right to the point. (Ha ha) Anyway the narrator was good, I’ll look for other books read by him.

Not for me
Revisado: 08-07-22
I gave this a try because the reviews were mixed. They were between really enjoyable or not liking it. I made it to chapter 8 and skipped to 9 to see if skipping through the story would be manageable, it wasn’t and I didn’t want to waste my time. This narrator is new to me and I thought he was pretty good. However, sometimes no matter how good the narrator is, he/she cannot make a terrible story good.

Just ok
Revisado: 08-02-22
This was a psychological thriller and was manageable. I don’t know of any author that does psychological thrillers as well as Jonathan Kelllerman. The narrator was okay but for some reason half way through the story, the mother, son and friend (Simon) started sounding the same and sounded like robots, at the end the voices were distinct again, I wonder if that was by design as the author added a supernatural element to the story which was weird but kind of worked. I gave it 3 stars overall but not sure if I will listen to anything else from this author.

Not fantastic; Manageable
Revisado: 07-16-22
I’m not giving the overall story 5 stars because it had too many lags / long discussions/ describing surroundings that had nothing to do with solving the crime or in my opinion the overall story. What actually made me listen to the entire story was the narrator. He kind of reminded me of John Rubinstein which made the story more bearable to continue to listen to during the lags. The characters were okay, the connection to them was okay, would I seek to listen to other novels by this author? Only if I had nothing else interesting to listen to.

Not Good
Revisado: 07-09-22
I only got to chapter 8 and could not listen any longer. The first chapters were long winded and the discussions were not related to solving the crime. I listen/read a lot of suspense/ thriller novels and don’t mind the author describing people or surroundings but going on and on with descriptions not related to helping solve the mystery takes away from the story. As for the narrator; I’ve listened to novels where the story itself wasn’t very good but the narrator made it exciting to listen to and then there are those novels that I stayed with because the story was good but the narrator was terrible. This narrator matched the story, he sounded just as bored as I got by the 8th chapter and made the story even more boring than it was.
I just could not listen to this for another 5 hrs and 45 min.

Promise not delivered
Revisado: 07-01-22
The cover of the book said that this novel had an explosive plot and final dramatic twist. It didn’t deliver. The plot would have been good if the author wasn’t so redundant in the snow killer’s POV and his attempt of bringing life to the police officer’s characters was terrible. He could have in my opinion cut out a lot of the unnecessary bantering. Overall, the story was way too long and became more and more boring. After chapter 20, I couldn’t take it anymore, I skipped ahead to the last few chapters and was glad I didn’t try to listen to the entire story. This is the first novel I attempted from this author and it will be the last. I enjoyed the narrator though, he did a good job with a less than exciting book.
