Historia
Emerson Knight is introverted and eccentric and has little to no sense of social etiquette. Good thing he's also brilliant, rich, and (some people might say) handsome, or he'd probably be homeless. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with megabank Blane-Grunwald. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job, until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight.

Way too "deus ex machina"
Revisado: 08-18-16
Totally unbelievable, not unlike a romance novel where a young, pretty girl lawyer meets a quirky BILLIONAIRE and then there is a life threatening chase cross country

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Not a recommendation for a depressed person
Revisado: 08-05-16
Over whelming, deeply sensitive, insightful, and so very very intimate and sad. The protagonist is a victim beyond all victims. And, he is also extremely intelligent and surrounded, in his adulthood, by loving friends.
But its continuous downward spiral into the deepest circle of hell, I found myself wishing and hoping for his death. After listening to 24 hours of this book, I could not go any further. Too much pain and suffering, described in a detailed and realistic way.Too realistic for me. I have had to give up.

Groundhog Day repeated in this awful book
Revisado: 08-01-16
I gave up on this book at the halfway mark, picked it back up, and then stopped 70% of the way through. It is tedious, the story is repetitive. In his efforts to help a mother find her kidnapped daughter from 30 years back, the detective (also an alcoholic) goes from one person to another asking the same questions and getting nowhere. The plot is stuck in a swamp of never-ending drinking and searching.

Historia
The much-anticipated return of Henning Mankell’s brilliant, brooding detective, Kurt Wallander. On a winter day in 2008, Håkan von Enke, a retired high-ranking naval officer, vanishes during his daily walk in a forest near Stockholm. The investigation into his disappearance falls under the jurisdiction of the Stockholm police. It has nothing to do with Wallander - officially. But von Enke is his daughter’s future father-in-law. And so, with his inimitable disregard for normal procedure, Wallander is soon interfering in matters that are not his responsibility.

Oh So Troubled...
Revisado: 03-22-16
I love this author but this book was a total downer. The story of a loner who had purposely isolated himself from friends etc. Lives on the tip of a peninsula in Norway, where he is only guy on the mailman's route. VERY slow moving. Pulling teeth.
Mankell is a master at painting the picture, but the subject of this picture is a big yawner

This was a terrific follow up to the Lizbeth story
Revisado: 09-16-15
I couldn't put this book down. I was hesitant to buy it since I thought that it was bound to be a disappointment. But it wasn't. I still got mixed up with all the Scandinavian names, but it sorted itself out. This book introduced a new character, Lizbeth's long lost sister, who is her nemesis. I am hoping since that relationship was not resolved, another book may be in the offing.

Depressing but well written WWII book
Revisado: 03-03-15
What did you like best about The Alphabet House? What did you like least?
well written, good character development
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
least interesting is that it covers 10+ months of a person in captivity... excruciating but very powerful
Do you think The Alphabet House needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The last few chapters seemed very deus ex machina

Just misses being a thriller
Revisado: 01-12-15
What would have made The President's Pilot better?
the author attempted to be Tom Clancy including very long, very detailed, very boring descriptions of long distance flight (including every button the pilots pushed). The intricate details just got to be too much very quickly.
What do you think your next listen will be?
A Ken Follet.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Narrator was a bit marble-mouthed but definitely tried to keep the listener listening
What character would you cut from The President's Pilot?
none

Big disappointment from this author
Revisado: 11-27-14
What did you like best about A Last Goodbye? What did you like least?
I thought it would be a mystery from this author. Instead it is a melodramatic story about a woman and a dog
Would you ever listen to anything by J.A. Jance again?
Yes, because I know this author does write good mysteries
What does Alison Fraser bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
nothing much
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
no

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Pulling my hair out, one strand at a time
Revisado: 08-30-14
Would you try another book from Louise Penny and/or Ralph Cosham?
I have listened to many Louise Penny and have found them to be an easy listen with a cozy feel. This one is soooo cozy that it is really difficult to follow. A real snoozer and definitely not worth the effort
Would you ever listen to anything by Louise Penny again?
No
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No, her other books set the scene in the little Canadian village quite nicely, and described the characters well too. I wonder if adding this guy Ralph is the problem. I never thought that L Penny's books could get sleepier but this one did. Her other novels did entertain.
