Historia
Born into poverty and raised in a brothel, Nell Gwynne sells oranges in the pit at London's King's Theater, newly reopened after the plague and the Great Fire devastated the city. Soon, her quick sense of humor and natural charm get her noticed by those who have the means to make her life easier. But the street-smart Nell knows a woman doesn't get ahead by selling her body. Through talent, charm, intelligence, and sheer determination, Nell works her way out of the pit and onto the stage to become the leading comedic actress of the day.

Terrible Ending

Story was boring, characters were boring, plot slow and tedious. Reader is left hanging at the end...no resolution and no real desire to find out.

Historia
A murdered opera singer. A duke drenched in her blood. For Bow Street Officer Hugh Marsden, the brutal killing is a straightforward case. Ever since his exile from polite society, the chance to arrest a high and mighty peer of the realm has never presented itself. Hugh won't snub the opportunity now. But Audrey Sinclair, the Duchess of Fournier, is certain her husband is wrongly accused, and she's determined to prove it to the arrogant Bow Street officer, even if she must employ her most peculiar ability—or perhaps curse—to guide her investigation. After all, a duchess can do as she pleases.

The story had potential but I kept waiting on the sexual tension to increase. It never did and the ending is so NOT satisfying.

Excellent Series
Revisado: 05-25-24
I am surprised that I like the 3 books I have read. No sex, No real bloody descriptions...each plot is different. I read/listen to 3-5 books a week. Sometimes I like romantic fiction, sometimes I like erotic fiction, sometimes I like 1000 page books that trace many generations and sometimes I like a little supernatural. What I don't like is poor character development and weak plots that go on and on and say very little. Geoffrey and Prudence are supposed to be detective (inquiry agents). He is ex-Pinkerton and she is an independently wealthy young woman whose father was a judge and he raised her in the law. In my opinion she is a walking disaster. She rarely consults her partner, bungles situations, and has much trouble holding onto her derringer. There is no sex but there is tension. Only time will tell if he ever gets the courage to ask her to marry him. I do hope the author makes her into a more worth investigator because she lands in trouble often and her partner constantly rescues her. I like the series so much I am buying the earlier ones to see how the story starts.

Nowhere did I see this was a magic/supernatural book or I would not have bought it. I don't care for sorcery and supernatural plots. It was so disjointed at the beginning, I could not keep up with the story. I tried to return but I had paid for the book without using a credit so I am stuck.

Reader Will Laugh Out Loud at Least Once!
Revisado: 06-12-23
Plot started out as a typical girls at a ball looking for husbands but the story is just funny! A murder (not funny) is the basis for the Earl's alienation from the ton but the story alternates between a marriage, a murder, an accident prone female character and how she turns out to save everyone. I read hundreds of books during the year and this one was truly unique and I laughed more than once.

Suspend Belief!
Revisado: 06-12-23
If you know anything about this period in England, one will realize that an unmarried woman would never approach a man to teach her lovemaking skills; however, it works. Plot had just enough tension to make reading Until Midnight enjoyable for a few hours.

Historia
A concubine at the palace learns quickly that there are many ways to capture the emperor's attention. Many paint their faces white and style their hair attractively, hoping to lure in the One Above All with their beauty. Some present him with fantastic gifts, such as jade pendants and scrolls of calligraphy, while others rely on their knowledge of seduction to draw his interest. Young Mei knows nothing of these womanly arts, yet she will give the emperor a gift he can never forget.

Epilogue Was the Best Part
Revisado: 04-28-23
Usually, I complain that books with less than 300 pages are just not worth the expense because character or plot will be substandard but this book could have done with better editing to 300 or less. There is so much moaning and groaning and questioning that there is little plot, just lots of characterization. It is surprising that the author could drag it out so long with such a weak plot. I kept waiting to see how Empress Wu would achieve power but it was so weak, I started skipping to next chapter. I have read several books of this type so I was very disappointed not only with the story but with the auditory part. The voice did not match the time nor the correct accent. I completed Rutherford's China several months ago so maybe that is why I did not like this book. The epilogue would have made a much better launch for the story.
