Historia
Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends — yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.

An important book, scholarly yet accessible
Revisado: 12-04-21
I have followed Carl Trueman for years and found him to be a careful and intelligent scholar and a faithful Christian. In this book he tackles issues of critical importance for our age, explains how we have ended up where we are, and offers thoughts for how we move forward. He uses the sexual revolution as a case study in how changes in the view of the self have affected our culture and how the church needs to understand this to be able to continue to minister in this modern age. Highly recommend.

Historia
As we all know, and as many of our well-established textbooks have argued for decades, the Inquisition was one of the most frightening and bloody chapters in Western history, Pope Pius XII was anti-Semitic and rightfully called "Hitler's Pope", the Dark Ages were a stunting of the progress of knowledge to be redeemed only by the secular spirit of the Enlightenment, and the religious Crusades were an early example of the rapacious Western thirst for riches and power. But what if these long-held beliefs were all wrong?

Great contact but robotic reading
Revisado: 01-18-20
The content is well-researched, interesting, and important. To my ear the narration was stilted and robotic, and this interfered with my enjoyment of the book. Do listen to a sample as my perspective may merely be personal preference.

Historia
Marcellino D'Ambrosio dusts off what might have been just dry theology to bring you the exciting stories of great heroes such as Ambrose, Augustine, Basil, Athanasius, John Chrysostom, and Jerome. These brilliant, embattled, and sometimes eccentric men defined the biblical canon, hammered out the Creed, and gave us our understanding of sacraments and salvation. It is they who preserved the rich legacy of the early Church for us.

Gives a Protestant a lot to consider
Revisado: 07-16-19
The author tells the story of the early church in a clear and compelling way. You get the impression that he is a man of faith but is seeking to tell the truth with gentleness. Nonetheless, what he says is compelling for those who tend to discount the truly Catholic nature of the early church. We see the seeds very early on of many doctrines later rejected by many Protestants.

Historia
First published in 1952, Witness came on the heals of America's trial of the century, in which Whittaker Chambers accused Alger Hiss, a full-standing member of the political establishment, of spying for the Soviet Union. In this penetrating philosophical memoir, Chambers recounts the famous case as well as his own experiences as a Communist agent in the United States, his later renunciation of communism, and his conversion to Christianity.

Lessons of the past current for today
Revisado: 07-24-17
Despite an interest in history and attending Harvard Law School, I had very little knowledge of Whittaker Chambers or of the Alger Hiss trials. I cannot believe what I did not know! The integrity and courage of one man at a critical point in our nation's history leaves us all in his debt. I especially enjoyed hearing of his background, how he emerged from a dysfunctional family, an earnest but misguided communist period, a time of turning to the land and faith for strength, to then confront an establishment that could not believe reality. Liberals didn't want to see one of their own as a card-carrying communist committing espionage because he came from their world and shared many of their same objectives. Might conservatives be excusing things in our current president because of the same sort of blindness? This book has value for all, especially those interested in history, politics , human nature, and agrarian life.

Historia
In 1652 a small group of Dutch farmers landed on the southernmost tip of Africa. Sent by the powerful Dutch India Company, their mission was simply to grow vegetables and supply ships rounding the cape. The colonists, however, were convinced by their strict Calvinist faith that they were among God's "Elect," chosen to rule over the continent. Their saga - bloody, ferocious, and fervent - would culminate three centuries later in one of the greatest tragedies of history.
