Historia
Things have gone bad among the colonies. Insurgents are building alien-hybrid armies and planet-killing weapons, threatening to upend the fragile balance of power in Province 921. There's not only trouble in the province—the Core Worlds are igniting as well. The Mogwa have asserted claims upon the Imperial Throne, causing their rivals to move against them. Earth's Hegemony and the rebels are pulled into a conflict that could tear the galaxy apart.

I've been reading and listening to this series since the first book. I'm very much not happy with this one. The entire book was a James McGill orgy. Almost none if any clever maneuvering. A lot of pointless stupidity that just happened to work out. The final 45 minutes was the only potentially interesting points. It honestly feels like AI wrote the whole book other than possibly the end. I can only hope that the next installment makes this one seem necessary at all.

Eleven years after the Mana Apocalypse, nineteen-year-old James Summers has more on his mind than just the flailing economy and a country full of monsters. Orphaned and living with his grandparents, he's given up on college in favor of working at the Coney Island Home Depot while pining for Sally, his cool, beautiful colleague.

really good
Revisado: 03-29-25
This book is like an NYC cop version of monster hunter. very well written, good story, a lot of foreshadowing of a more complex story in future. Completely worth a 5 star. My only gripe is the cop morality, because it seems hypocritical. I'm not one to downgrade a rating because of a difference in ways of seeing the world. it's a really good book and I look forward to reading more.

Historia
A gunslinger with four affinities is a myth. It's the kind of story whispered in frontier saloons one drink before closing and around campfires in the dead of night. For the heroes and villains in those tales, that impossible power is a boon, a gift. For Mr. Jones, it's a curse. Of course, that's not his real name. He's had many. Changing names is necessary when you possess a power that every lawman and outlaw would kill to obtain. To survive, you keep your head down, kill when you must, and never stay in one place too long.

I'm not a fan of westerns but I do like magic and I've read all the great series so took a shot. This was a really good book. Interesting magic system, lots of mysteries and foreshadowing. Cool and flawed main character and interesting supporting characters. I can honestly say I'm so excited to read or listen further in the series. Thank you to the author for expanding my genre horizons.

Revisado: 04-17-24
I love each book in this series on its own merits. As well as the old coyote of a man McGill. More than that I love how the story is slowly building towards revolution and I can't wait to see how James gets involved. I am kind of hoping something happens to make him a bit more serious and add direction to his lies and weaseling. James tricky murderhobo is James at his best.

I thought this series was wrapping up with this one. It's barely leaving the opening Salvo based off the plot so far. This also makes me feel better about the protagonists' progression. Looking forward to see where this all goes.

Decent novel
Revisado: 09-11-23
A few plot elements are definitely a bit forced and main character has remained somewhat unnecessarily weak. For instance, killing immediately when capture and draining would be easy more strategically sound and quite easy. Other than that annoyance the story progresses at an ok pace and is written well.

Grrrr
Revisado: 04-25-22
This writer is gifted in making a person become invested in the story. The narrator is likewise gifted. The story itself is well written and enthralling. All this, makes the issues more painful. Characters bend in personality and ability to fit a certain plot path. People with great ability become useless. Intelligent people stupid. One moment a person is capable of battle against a cross between a sabertooth and a stegosaurous and the next a spoiled child can defeat them. If it was all around badly written I would just dismiss these books as trash. It's because the author obviously has so much ability that the literary laziness hurts so much.

So good, and I wonder if anyone else hopes Kat Dennings really would be the one that comes to take you away when you die. I feel like that would be very comforting.

First book by this author and wow. Was it a book for the ages? Maybe not, the series isn't complete, so yet to be seen. It is however very satisfying, moreso than I even hoped and I'm very much an optimist. So excited to read more, and I was so happy about this novel I started another series by this author.
