Overall engaging
Revisado: 01-24-25
I am a little tired of the “hinting at the long ago secret throughout the present plot” device, but overall I enjoyed the book. Florrie was a great character, and her best friend Pinky was wonderful as well!

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Almost gave up at first because of the unlikable characters, but stuck it out as the wit, insight, and compassion became clear. Really enjoyed it.

Historia
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

Powerful, illuminating, and devastating. Harriot mixes family stories with the truth behind the “whitewashed” history peddled to us. Chapter 11 should be required reading. Don’t miss this scorching, unforgettable book.

Potential. . . unfulfilled
Revisado: 06-15-24
The male reader was terrible, and the female reader put way too much emphasis on everything. The plot made me cringe, as the main characters both break basic ethical rules almost immediately, and the supporting roles are mostly flat characters--the villain ex-girlfriend, the "bro" boss. There's a body-empowerment story fighting to be told here, but, at least in the audio version, it's lost beneath the other issues.

Vivid reminder of "the bad old days"
Revisado: 01-15-24
I've liked other books in this series, but this one was flat, humorous, and filled with casual sexism and misogyny that provided a vivid picture of what life was like for women when they were all evaluated by their looks, single women were seen as lacking or desperate, and "coeds" were undervalued at every turn. I don't think Kemelman intended a critique. The Rabbi doesn't offer any valuable push back or insight, either--whew. Done with this series, even if offered as a freebie! Avoid!

Historia
On paper, Sarah Levy’s life was on track. She was 28, living in New York City, working a great job, and socializing every weekend. But Sarah had a secret: her relationship with alcohol was becoming toxic. And only she could save herself. Drinking Games explores the role alcohol has in our formative years, and what it means to opt out of a culture completely enmeshed in drinking. It’s an examination of what our short-term choices about alcohol do to our long-term selves and how they challenge our ability to be vulnerable enough to discover what we really want in life.

Poorly written despite potentially powerful message
Revisado: 07-03-23
Could barely make it through this story. I wish Levy continued health, happiness, and sobriety. I also wish her editor had required further drafts, more insightful writing, and… just more oomph. This could have been an essay—possibly by a high school student— but it’s a weak piece of writing.

Not the best in the series
Revisado: 06-25-23
I’ve liked the earlier stories which I read versus listening to them. I think the plot in this one was a little lacking, and the reader was stilted and awkward, which didn’t help.

Powerful , engrossing story – –
Revisado: 05-11-23
This is not an easy listen, but it is an excellent and unforgettable one. I would read it up there with “Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine“ in terms of showing how people’s worlds break down and can be reconstructed. The reader is excellent, and the characters are both frustrating and funny at the same time as many human beings are! The story has left me with an enormous “book hangover”!
