Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Historia
One late spring evening in 2010, Shannan Gilbert - after running through the oceanfront community of Oak Beach screaming for her life - went missing. No one who had heard of her disappearance thought much about what had happened to the 24-year-old: She was a Craigslist escort who had been fleeing a scene - of what, no one could be sure. The Suffolk County police, too, seemed to have paid little attention - until seven months later, when an unexpected discovery in a bramble alongside a nearby highway turned up four bodies, all evenly spaced, all wrapped in burlap.

Before reading I did not know the names of Maureen, Melissa, Amber, Megan or Shannan. Kolker’s outstanding unsolved mystery appears to be solved, or has it simply started a new chapter?

Historia
On February 21, 1992, 22-year-old Brian Bechtold walked into a police station in Port St. Joe, Florida, and confessed that he’d shot and killed his parents in their family home in Silver Spring, Maryland. He said he’d been possessed by the devil. He was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and ruled “not criminally responsible” for the murders on grounds of insanity. But after the trial, where do the "criminally insane" go?

Mikita Fan -This Book Not So Much
Revisado: 08-07-21
Loved Brottman’s work An Unexplained Death although I did not share her ultimate analysis.
This piece would have been better served had she narrated it herself, from her POV similarly as ultimately it is her clinical investigative curiosity that is driving her in the first place.
The narration was abysmal, and because I don’t like to be unkind, I just kept thinking the artist was trying to imitate Brottman, failing miserably. I’m not sure how anyone can narrate with such an obvious disinterest.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Audio Book Report
Revisado: 07-07-21
Poor description of the title and certainly glad I did not waste a credit on this. It’s almost like an interview transcript or audio research notes for a book report. It’s not even enough to qualify for any post grad work like a thesis or dissertation but it is definitely formatted similarly.
The narration of the work is unsalvageable and I was left wondering if the artist was using this piece as a demo or stepping stone. Even Scott Brick would fall asleep from this content.

Excellent Storyline- Better BBC Series
Revisado: 09-28-19
I purchased this book in pre-order in 2011 and forgot about it until I came across the new BBC series first season. Maybe it’s me, but I really needed the “visual” connection to these characters and story arcs to keep my sincere interest and to finish all three books. As many reviewers point out- it does seem like this basic genre may be suffering from a bit of saturation and the Authors motivation was to throw an actual historians hat in the ring at the time that Vampire Diaries, Twilight and The Magicians have satisfied the “covens” yearning for their forbidden Vampire + human relationships.
The second book in this series was a filler to protract the end, in my view it was unnecessary ( I returned it) and I am hoping the richness of Harkness historical prowess shines through the TV series ( although what is with the 8 episodes a season, it’s not GOT) . In contrast, I find the Cable series positively lavish and the cinematography and editing so far exceeds the imagination ( which should be the goal). The thing that really sets this work apart from translating as your basic historical tome, is that one of the main plot lines is the genetics factor- I am hopeful the series pays more attention to the prospect of this more contemporary Scientific angle than the books did. It was clear to me it was not Harkness’s wheelhouse.

About as close as one can get to observing this entire true crime story unfold as if watching through a giant terrarium, Renner narrating Renner was a brilliant choice.
The intersections of the Author, victims, investigators witnesses and suspects serve to “charge” Renner’s missive here- to solve the nearly 30 year old murder of Amy Mijaljevic.
While the book was written in 2006, Renner only preformed the narration in late 2018. At times, I swore I could hear the very faint giggle of an innocent 10 year old making her approval and her presence known. When this case is solved it will be in no small part due to Renners work.

Where does The Doll Maker rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have read dozens of audiobooks- while many have been excellent ( and I admit some are the dreary work kind) I have never been actually scared in broad daylight on a 5 lane highway while listening to a book before.
What other book might you compare The Doll Maker to and why?
I wouldn't. For me, this was a stand alone narration performance "off screen" but so vivid and character-rich the mental stage was plenty.
Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
NO- but I intend to- he was magnificent!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Scared a criminalist- jus sayin.

Historia
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Revisado: 12-12-14
What made the experience of listening to David and Goliath the most enjoyable?
Not his narration, lol. He is very dry and that makes it tough to get through what I might refer to the statistical portion of the book- but it is well worth it.
What other book might you compare David and Goliath to and why?
Gladwell writes from the educational perspective. He wants us to know that thinking differently is not bad- it is productive and we should treat those that do not think like us as a possible learning tool.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Malcolm Gladwell?
yes, I would. My schedule is such that I rarely have time to read an actual book or one on my Kindle- commuting is my time to enjoy books.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The proper take on David and Goliath and the real lesson that we need to revisit the way we see our influences.
