Spicy romance
Revisado: 06-25-24
I really liked the action in this book, the realism. There has been no 'I'm a girl and can do anything, like beat up a guy obviously stronger than me.'
I love that the story is coming together, like little puzzle pieces, making the past much more clear and leaving me excited for what is to come.
Not to mention, I appreciated the spicy but clean romance that underlines Scarlet and Wolf. *chef's kiss*

It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. Reading was fantastic
Revisado: 01-23-23
So, I don't usually enjoy female readers. When they try to do a range of voices, the males sound dopey or just stupid.
I was really impressed not only by the ability to make everyone sound unique but also by the way she voiced the Antinium! The ant people have a clicking to their words, and rolled Rs, and she just did it so well! I was impressed.
As for the story, I love the 'normal person gets jerked into a magical world' adventure, but this one follows two main characters, as well as a few side ones occasionally.
I wish that there wasn't so much crying, but considering the events of the story, I get it. As a woman I can get emotional being sad, happy, scared, angry.... yeah, my eyes just leak. They broken. So I understand, but I kinda wish the main character wouldn't have been so emotional. On the other hand, the other main character was just a ball of constant angry.
Trope. Sometimes a character has to get knocked down so that they develop. I hope we see more character growth.
This story also hits hard in a few places.
Overall, I think it was a great book, and I will be continuing onto book 2.

Taste the writing
Revisado: 01-19-23
In my life, in the past, I have been annoyed with authors who describe things exactly the same, if they describe something multiple times. I did not have that annoyance with this book. Many scenes feel like they could be the same, and yet the size, the horror, never lost that potency.
Basically, there were times that I felt like I could taste these descriptions.
Excellent writing. Twisty story. Dark and gritty, and enough humor that at times I laughed out loud.
Great job.

Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Very enjoyable!
Revisado: 11-18-22
This book was very much like the He Who Fights With Monsters books. Only, those have 6 or 7 books out now, where this one.... who knows?
I really liked the magic system. I liked the scope and scale. The sped up passage of time was, at times, difficult to get behind. So much detail went into explaining some things, while others, it felt like not so much attention to detail was given.
My one problem with this book would be the flow, or the pace.
Otherwise, it is a great story. Funny, compelling, but honest. The MC wasn't just totally accepting and okay with everything. Mental health is frequently the focus. Self assessment.
I thought the author did great with that.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 10-17-22
This was honestly hard to get through. There is a sense of innocence gradually lost.
I found myself rooting for various characters, for love, for bonds, and I found hard emotion rising at the thought of possible abuse.
I wished that more detail would have been expressed, there at the end, but I am satisfied with the story over all.
Some have said that this is their favorite, but, not for me. It's very good. Worth the credit or listen, but I don't know that I would re-visit it.

Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

I wish they could all hear it.
Revisado: 09-01-22
I enjoyed that the author pointed out the self-diagnosis of it all. That it is a money maker for doctors. That the Hippocratic Oath flies right out the window.
I also found it very pointed how the majority of this is 'on-line'. I have two boys, one with mild autism, and we are all white. As you may be aware, a straight white male is the most evil thing you can be in America, so I worry about the future of my kids. I am a single mom, age 33, and I am a Christian. I hope the values that I kept through my life will rub off on my kids. Basically, I DO hope they turn out just like me.
In my high school days, because my Aquarius blood demands I be different, original, creative, I used to pretend all manner of things. I was a vampire, I was ancient, I had multiple personalities. My friend group played along, coming up with fun oddities of their own, but at the end of the day, we all knew we were pretending.
Before I ever got to High School, I would play pretend all day. My parents would support my creative mind, and then bring me back to reality.
Parents today don't seem to be willing to actually be parents. They want to be their child's best friend. I'm so glad that my parents acted like my parents. I'm so glad I could tell reality apart from imagination. I'm so glad I grew up when I did.
This book focuses on young women. It would be interest to see the situation for young men as well.
I also wish that all young people who are confused or uncomfortable would read this book and really think about it before making any extreme decisions. I wish more parents would ban the internet from their children's lives. No smart phones, no laptops or tablets. Let kids be kids.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

He was good
Revisado: 08-20-22
While the performance wasn't what I would consider 'top-notch', it wasn't the worst thing ever. He did great with what he has. I know it's hard for older men to sound like little boys, little girls, and sultry women. I am also of the mind to say no one is perfect. That is why it only got a middle rating.
The story itself speaks to my heart. I read it before I found it here, and it was years ago. There was much I had forgotten. The magic is just as real the second time around.
The contortionist's tale hits hard.
The clock maker was a bright spot that rings emotion from me.
The twins and their circus feel like home.
I also love the very unique and rarely used use of the 2nd person bits through the story.
Very worth the purchase and the time. It is a wonderful book.

An exciting way to wrap it all up
Revisado: 08-02-22
I've loved these books from the get-go. While I felt that a few of the characters deviated quite a bit from how they were in Fablehaven, it didn't detract from the story.
I don't like canon fodder though. That was a thing I could have done without.
Some characters that you expect to be a big help, are detained, conveniently keeping them away from the main action. While it was disappointing, it did put the spotlight on Kendra and Seth.
I plan to own all the books, and read them to my children.
Great job Mull!

Still properly funny
Revisado: 07-24-22
Part of loving this series comes with the humor. As dark as the life of those involved can get, they still manage to find a way to laugh, and find peace. A wonderful reminder of how we should also go about the trials we face in the here and now.
There is always something good, even when it seems beyond your reach.
I am also very much missing the other, more magical world: Palimascus? Whatever. I hope we get to see it again, or at least get an update on the Team, to see how they are holding up.

This one was hard
Revisado: 07-10-22
This installment of the story was difficult to listen to.
I grew to love the other world, the astral spaces, the inhabitants thinking Jason was a loon....
But this was incredibly charming in its own way. It had a LOT of staging, and I guessed who was brought along before they revealed it, which was fantastic. There was some good action, and I've got to say I loved Vermilion and Tyko.
The family interaction was a bit too close to home. I want to believe I'd share the secrets with my family, but I don't know if I actually would.
Great book, excited for what comes next.
