Historia
Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

Cool Story, Slow Start
Revisado: 10-08-24
The story feels pretty plain and grim until a third of the way in, and then it's got some suspense that builds until the end. I'm not a huge fan of the power differential between the 2 main characters. It feels way out of proportion.
Also, the recording (for me at least) drops out the first 1 of 2 syllables of every first word after the reader pauses. It's often jarring and grating. It feels like no one bothered to quality check this recording after a first pass at editing or something. Maybe they were trying to cut the time on it? I don't know.
I liked the story and the world built, some of the characters. But there's a lot of questions that don't get answered until late in the game. If you want to know what all the hype is about and save some time, skip the first ~15 chapters.

Historia
It’s fair to say that Maddie’s life in London is far from rewarding. With a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana (yet still somehow manages to be overbearing), Maddie is the primary caretaker for her father, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s. At work, her boss is a nightmare and Maddie is tired of always being the only Black person in every meeting.

Accessible. Endearing. Deep.
Revisado: 02-12-24
Maddie's family is from Ghana, but she grew up in the UK. She deals with family obligations, depression, traditional values, friendships, relationships, racism, and navigates her career as a young professional black woman in British publishing. Her family's culture doesn't set her up for success as a 20-something singleton, and she is her dad's caretaker, so she deals with some heavy responsibilities. She's reserved, serious, creative, caring, innocent, beautiful, and learning to be assertive and take risks without falling in the deep end. I like her. She's 'sensible,' but there's still a tricky tightrope to walk because cultures clash, she's gaslit, and there's so many levels to every conversation and interaction.

Historia
Beginning with a sweetly funny, moving account of her arranged marriage, the author undercuts stereotypes and offers the refreshing view of an American life through Muslim eyes. In chapters leavened with humor, hope, and insight, she recounts an immigrant's daily struggles balancing assimilation with preserving heritage, overcoming religious barriers from within and distortions of Islam from without, and confronting issues of raising her children as Muslims - while they lobby for a Christmas tree!

The Intersectional Environmentalist examines the inextricable link between environmentalism, racism, and privilege and promotes awareness of the fundamental truth that we cannot save the planet without uplifting the voices of its people. Written by Leah Thomas, a prominent voice in the field and the activist who coined the term intersectional environmentalism, this book is simultaneously a call to action, a guide to instigating change for all, and a pledge to work toward the empowerment of all people and the betterment of the planet.

A Good Intersectional Primer
Revisado: 03-20-23
This book does great defining environmental, Intersectional, diversity, equity, and inclusion terms and explaining the context in which they are used for environmental justice. The author provides some important statistics that were new to me. She broke down the connections between issues, and how these issues are so intertwined. She showed how there's the potential to solve multiple/multifaceted challenges by solving environmental issues. Awesome. Also, she is a very pleasant reader.

Practical, down-to-earth discussion of community and family, how we form them, support each other, and the obstacles we face. Love it, love it! Sometimes I feel tired and checked out, and that's why I picked this up, and she talks about that, about applying boundaries in community. Ms. Birdsong is a lovely reader too.
