Historia
Sir Lawrence Linwood is dead. More accurately, he was murdered—savagely beaten to death in his own study with a mediaeval mace. The murder calls home his three adopted children: Alan, an archeologist; Roger, an engineer; and Caroline, a journalist. But his heirs soon find that his last testament contains a strange proviso—that his estate shall go to the heir who solves his murder.

Fun Mystery
Revisado: 11-11-24
I don't like gore porn and while this book does entail some unpleasant things, it doesn't go into detail or dwell unecessarily on them.
The characters are likable, the plot is enjoyable. The narrator does a fine job.
This hits the right spot for me. Not insipid pap like most "cupcake cozies," but not too gritty, either.
Set in the 1920s (with earlier flashbacks) this book offers 10+ hours of enjoyable entertainment.

Brilliant Barbra Pym; Perfect narrator
Revisado: 09-28-24
Barbra Pym's subtle, ironic, insightful comedies of manners are often just exactly what I need to read. Mary Sarah narrates this beautifully, adding her own measure to the art.

Historia
The local society could only speculate how a pair of turtledoves would cope as the guests of the scandalous Lady Dacey. Surely she would attempt to corrupt them - an act that both Pamela Perryworth and Honoria Goodham would see as welcome entertainment in their rigid, joyless lives. Though Mrs. Perryworth is married - most unhappily - and the young Honoria has a cloying tendency to read too much scripture, the purity and loveliness of both ladies nonetheless inflames the senses of two notorious lords.

Egad, the mispronounced name.
Revisado: 08-02-24
I just wanted to relax with a bit of MC Beaton/Marion Chesney fluff, but besides ignoring the sillier parts, I was driven a bit mad by the narrator pronouncing the protagonists name (Honoria), which should have been pronounced /on-OR-ia/, as /HonorEEA/, (rhymes with gonorrhea). 🥴

Historia
"Sir Nigel" is a historical novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, set in the beginning of the Hundred Years' War, spanning 1350 to 1356. It is the background to Doyle's novel, The White Company, and describes the early life of that book's hero Nigel Loring, a knight in the service of King Edward III. The character is loosely based on the historical knight Neil Loring. The tale, at its outset, traces the fortunes of the family of Loring of the Manor of Tilford in Surrey, many of whose scions had been prominent in the service of the Norman and Angevin Kings of England, against the backdrop of the Black Death.

Great Wholesome Adventure
Revisado: 08-02-24
If you're tired of contemporary angst and nastiness, enjoy a quest or two with Sir Nigel. Yes, there's a bit of bias for Merry Old England, but that won't detract from your enjoyment.

I enjoyed the first book in the series, but this story seems to have outgrown the author and rambked inti an angsty, attenuated, and contrived mess.

Revisado: 03-13-24
Although the author uses the title "Dr.," the contents don't reflect more than one mediocre man's personal ideas. I listened to this because it was free and I was curious. If you subscribe to these ideas, you deserve the shabby outcome you will get.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

There is plenty of evidence from over the years that the royal family is dysfunctional and mean-spirited. I've long suspected an institutional narcissism that cannot be remedied. I'm glad he found Megan, and that they are living an emotionally healthy life. It's great if he's made a family that can provide the emotional nourishment the royals never could.

John Lithgow has compiled an outstanding collection of memorable poems and has gathered his famous friends to read them. The wide variety of carefully selected poetry in this audiobook provides the perfect introduction to reel in those who are new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. Lithgow offers insightful and sometimes poignant commentary to accompany each poem. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud".
