Probably the best book I’ve read all year.

Adam Gussow’s memoir read in his own voice is easily one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year. His pain, joy and fear is palpable in every story as he tells of the years he spent playing on the streets of Harlem with Sterling Magee and his many adventures around the world.
Mr. Gussow does not hold back on any detail even when it doesn’t paint him in the best light or is potentially embarrassing to discuss all these years later; and although the book is now more than 20 years past its first edition, it could’ve been written last week. I strongly recommend this book to any fan of the blues or street music culture.

I’ve listened to many virtual voice books on Audible this last year and in most circumstances, it does not impact the information delivered. However, it completely ruined this book for me. The virtual voice would read musical notation incorrectly, try to sound out different notes from their letters, narrate all the letters and numbers in a table that the reader cannot see and painfully mispronounce the long URL’s for reference websites.
I believe the printed version of this book may actually be a useful resource for those just starting to play, but this audiobook should have been edited into a format that was more ‘virtual voice friendly’ before allowing AI just to narrate every single printed character. The author and/or Audible should really consider going back and removing the tables, websites, and other areas of the book that do not lend themselves to being read aloud. Providing these resources and reference materials as a downloadable PDF would be much more helpful.
