Historia
Shaken by the loss of her father, drained by her job at the United Nations, and conflicted over failed relationships, Natasha Scripture asked herself the question at the heart of her anxiety: What is my purpose? The answer was not about finding love; it was about recognizing its source. The result is Man Fast, a true and intimate spiritual detective story. With courage, honesty, and wit, Natasha shares the story of her awakening.

Slow going.
Revisado: 02-27-22
The subject was interesting, but not lively. Usually I prefer the author as narrator, but in this case I think it would have been better to choose someone else.

Historia
A brilliant literary debut, inspired by a true story: the final days of a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829. Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her.

This is a review of the audio book. I listened to the end because I wanted to find out what happened, but it was a struggle. Now I am glad it is over but I still feel confused and will have to research the historical case. Narrator was excellent.

Never forget
Revisado: 01-01-22
This novel was a very well written story of France's participation in WWII Nazi horrors. I was not aware of this part of history. The narration is very ggod. We must never forget the Holocaust, and its book is gentle way of helping us grasp it.

Historia
Aretha Franklin began life as the golden daughter of a progressive and promiscuous Baptist preacher. Raised without her mother, she was a gospel prodigy who gave birth to two sons in her teens and left them and her native Detroit for New York, where she struggled to find her true voice. It was not until 1967, when a white Jewish producer insisted she return to her gospel-soul roots, that fame and fortune finally came via "Respect" and a rapidfire string of hits.

Interesting but too long.
Revisado: 12-30-21
If this book is accurate, I found myself not liking Aretha as much as I expected to, or even feeling great respect. Nevertheless, I love learning the history of music of my lifetime, so I got all the way through it as if it was a course I was taking. I enjoy his music and current events are so intertwined. Mediocre narration.

Historia
In the 70s and 80s, thousands of Hmong families made the journey from the war-torn jungles of Laos to the overcrowded refugee camps of Thailand and onward to the United States, all in search of a new place to call home. Decades later, their experiences remain largely unknown. Kao Kalia Yang was driven to tell her own family's story after her grandmother’s death. The Latehomecomer is a tribute to that grandmother, a remarkable woman whose spirit held her family together.

Revisado: 12-11-21
I think that to really enjoy this book you need to know a little about the Hmong people, or at least be curious about them. I am so glad the author narrated it herself ! Even if we are not so please with her voice quality, it helps because we know it is genuine. I don't think an American narrator could have made such an impact.
It is a very thought provoking book. I have never experienced the kind of family love that is written about here. We need a new world!

Historia
In the early 1900s, women were dying in large numbers from treatable diseases because they avoided receiving medical care. Examinations performed by male doctors were often demeaning and even painful. In addition, women faced stigma from illness—a diagnosis could greatly limit their ability to find husbands, jobs or be received in polite society. Motivated by personal loss and frustration over inadequate medical care, Elizabeth Blackwell, Lizzie Garret Anderson and Sophie Jex-Blake fought for a woman's place in the male-dominated medical field.

Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Historia
First published in 1952, Witness came on the heals of America's trial of the century, in which Whittaker Chambers accused Alger Hiss, a full-standing member of the political establishment, of spying for the Soviet Union. In this penetrating philosophical memoir, Chambers recounts the famous case as well as his own experiences as a Communist agent in the United States, his later renunciation of communism, and his conversion to Christianity.

Powerful
Revisado: 11-22-21
As a child of the 1950's, I was very aware of the name Alger Hiss. Not until listening to this book have I ever known why. It is now one of the few times that I wish my parents were still alive so that I could interview them. When I ask my contemporaries if they recognize this name, they invariably say no. Thus, this book has filled in a few of the blanks for me.
I do not know if I would have loved the printed book as much as I have fallen in love with the audio version. The narrator was SUPERB. It might have been a dry text compared to the engaging and satisfying way Mr. MacDonald made it come alive.

Historia
Robert Oppenheimer was among the most brilliant and divisive of men. As head of the Los Alamos Laboratory, he oversaw the successful effort to beat the Nazis in the race to develop the first atomic bomb – a breakthrough that was to have eternal ramifications for mankind and that made Oppenheimer the “Father of the Atomic Bomb.” But with his actions leading up to that great achievement, he also set himself on a dangerous collision course with Senator Joseph McCarthy and his witch-hunters. In Robert Oppenheimer: A Life Inside the Center, Ray Monk, author of peerless biographies of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, goes deeper than any previous biographer in the quest to solve the enigma of Oppenheimer’s motivations and his complex personality.

As a child of the Cold War and niece of an MIT physicist of the time, I am interested in what made it all take place. This biography is very long, but as an audio book I was able to enjoy all 33 hours and learn things I never knew. This is the history that made me the person I am today, and I am glad to now have more pieces to the puzzle.
